The Horse Sense Blog compares the nonsense in today's news with good ol' fashioned horse sense

“…I shall speak forth my sentiments freely and without reserve.… It is only in this way that we can hope to arrive at truth, and fulfill the great responsibility which we hold to God and our country. Should I keep back my opinions at such a time, through fear of giving offense, I should consider myself as guilty of treason towards my country, and of an act of disloyalty toward the Majesty of Heaven, which I revere above all earthly kings.” - Patrick Henry, March 23, 1775

"The further a society drifts from truth the more it will hate those who speak it." - George Orwell

Are Republicans That Are Pushing A Chris Christie Candidacy Missing The Mark?

Here’s the Nonsense:  Chris Christie needs to enter the presidential race because he is the perfect conservative candidate for the Republicans to defeat the Democrats.
Here’s the Horse Sense:  Chris Christie has something that many of us really like.  He’s great at an immediate comeback when put on the spot.    There’s probably no person on the national political scene today who can do that as well as Governor Christie.  But let’s remember, he’s an attorney and obviously his training as such along with his intellect has given him a gift to shine in this area.  But that doesn’t make him a true conservative.  That doesn’t make him a good candidate for president.  It just makes him good at a comeback.
When you add those skills to his in-your-face, confrontational style of saying what he thinks you have a man that is easy to respect and admire.  People like it when people say what they think.  But it doesn’t make him a conservative, which is what this country has to have to survive.
So far I haven’t seen anything that really points to Governor Christie being a true conservative.  I have read that he supports cap and trade, accepts the highly questionable and unproven ideas the left supports on climate change, supports a government healthcare system idea that some are calling “Christie-care” and that he refused to join other states in the lawsuit against Obamacare.
Those issues alone should give us pause to look much deeper into this man’s positions before we give him blanket acceptance as the representative of what the Republicans are putting forth to save this nation.  This is the last chance we have to turn this country around.  This is not just another election.  This is about survival of the country, the American way of life and the American Dream for our children.
People on the right are fighting two problems.  One is the internal problem of the true conservatives controlling the party versus the so-called conservatives that are really nothing more than Democrat-lite.  The other problem is that they are in such a hurry to find someone to beat the Democrats in the next election that they are willing to fall for someone who might win a popularity contest but cannot win against the national Democrat machine.  They need to understand that there is no need to rush this process.  Rather they can use the time to their advantage to do proper vetting of each candidate and what they stand for.  And then they must realize that when they put forth a true conservative candidate with true conservative principles then, and only then, do they have the best chance to win over the Democrats and save this nation from the mess we’ve gotten ourselves into.
Governor Christie has a great personality.  His in-your-face style is very attractive.  And his willingness to say what’s on his mind is extremely refreshing.  But just because there are things about his personality and style that we may like doesn’t mean that he’s proven to be a true conservative, let alone the conservative to run for the presidency and turn this nation around.  Contrary to what the media would have us believe, time is on our side.  We should take our time to carefully choose the right candidate not just to defeat the Democrats, but to lead this nation through the treacherous waters we face and put us back on a track to fiscal and regulatory sanity.
