The Horse Sense Blog compares the nonsense in today's news with good ol' fashioned horse sense

“…I shall speak forth my sentiments freely and without reserve.… It is only in this way that we can hope to arrive at truth, and fulfill the great responsibility which we hold to God and our country. Should I keep back my opinions at such a time, through fear of giving offense, I should consider myself as guilty of treason towards my country, and of an act of disloyalty toward the Majesty of Heaven, which I revere above all earthly kings.” - Patrick Henry, March 23, 1775

Cheney’s ABC News Interview Reveals Rubio Unqualified For VP Slot

Here’s the Nonsense:  Former VP Dick Cheney says that Palin was unqualified as running mate for McCain.  We shouldn’t make that mistake again.  Let’s run Marco Rubio because he’s Hispanic and well-spoken.

Here’s the Horse Sense:  Former VP Dick Cheney’s opinion that Sarah Palin wasn’t qualified means that Marco Rubio wouldn’t be qualified for VP either.  Cheny's right about Rubio and if the Republicans don't realize it they’ll pay dearly.

In an interview with ABC News, former Vice President Dick Cheney said he doesn’t think Sarah Palin was a good choice as a running mate for John McCain in 2008.  In discussing it he said, “…based on her background, she’d only been governor for, what, two years. I don’t think she passed that test…of being ready to take over.”  Cheney believes that executive experience is critically important for the VP choice. Based on that criteria Marco Rubio is less qualified than Palin was.  That, among other reasons, is why Rubio could be a damaging choice for Romney.

Mr. Cheney’s point about executive experience is very important.   President Obama’s lack of experience is one of the reasons our nation is in the trouble it is in.  And Rubio is in the same boat with experience that Obama was in 2008.  Rubio's lack of experience will be damaging to his credibility.

As I stated in my May 1st, 2012 blog post, Marco Rubio is very unqualified as Romney’s running mate.  Not only because of his lack of any executive experience (just like President Obama), but also because that lack of experience would be contradictory to one of Mitt Romney’s greatest claims to the presidency, which is his own executive experience.  To say to the public that he should be elected president because he’s got the experience to get us out of the financial mess we’re in, but then in the next breath to choose Rubio as his running mate who is not experienced at all would be a huge mistake.

Rubio is a talented and well-spoken young senator.  But he has no experience running anything.  For Romney to try to explain why he’d choose a man with no experience to be a heartbeat away from the presidency would bring into question Romney’s judgment.  And don’t think for a moment that the Obama campaign wouldn’t use it against him.  They’re looking for anything they can to weaken Romney’s position and attract voters back to Obama.

Rubio’s youth, problem record of handling money, and lack of experience are some of the key reasons why choosing him would hurt Romney.  Cheney said that reasons like ethnicity are also poor reasons to choose someone.  Cheney has significant experience in the political world and shouldn’t be taken lightly.  He feels that the choice has to be someone who is obviously qualified to step into the presidency on a moment’s notice.  The choice of VP is the first decision the voters will see the nominee make.  It has to be a good choice, an impressive choice, and a strong choice to gain voter’s confidence.

While many have bought into the excitement about Rubio as a young, enthusiastic, and well-spoken person for Romney’s running mate, some are looking deeper and see problems.  City on a Hill Political Observer says:

Rubio is a great Senator from Florida.  He's an extremely impressive politician with a bright future.  He has, however, no real executive experience to speak of, and has accomplished nothing of significance in his brief 2 years in the U.S. Senate.  He would help with Latinos and with Florida, but his lack of serious legislative accomplishments would allow the media to savage him relentlessly as unqualified.  Yes, Obama's record was thinner.  It doesn't matter.  They are his propagandists.  When that narrative begins, Mr. Rubio would have little to offer to counter that charge.  His close bond with Jeb Bush also has tainted his standing with tea party activists and independents.  He needs to spend more time in the Senate and actually accomplish something.  His selection would be a mistake.  He'd generate some excitement but would ultimately be destroyed by the media.  His bond with Jeb Bush would also make him less likely to help with the tea party and conservatives.  They wouldn't be outraged, but they wouldn't be thrilled either.

And the Miami Herald in listing the pros and cons of potential VP choices for Romney said of Rubio:

PRO: A conservative favorite who could provide a jolt of youthful enthusiasm and improve Romney’s standing with Hispanics.
CON: A freshman senator with less experience than the other contenders. Appeal outside Cuban-American voters is questionable. He has an uncertain rapport with Romney – Rubio only endorsed him as the Republican primaries began to wind down. News reports that as a former Florida house speaker Rubio charged personal items to a state party credit card could provide a distraction.
And in another article pointed out some of Rubio’s serious problems that Romney would have to deal with should Rubio be chosen as running mate:

Rubio’s 2010 Senate campaign was fined $8,000 by the Federal Elections Commission, according to a just-released report that said it received “prohibited, excessive and other impermissible contributions totaling $210,173.09.”
By itself, the fine is a pittance for a campaign that raised about $21 million. The errors appear to be relatively small and largely clerical.
Still, it’s sloppy. It’s also a surprise. And it feeds into a broader narrative that Rubio is risky.
Romney’s campaign isn’t the type that suffers sloppiness, surprise or risk. Meantime, the New York-Washington media establishment seems eager to portray the 40-year-old Rubio as unprepared to be a heartbeat away from the White House.
The article went on to say:
Still, this isn’t Rubio’s first bookkeeping problem.
In 2008, The Miami Herald discovered he failed to properly disclose a generous home loan from a politically connected bank. About the same time, he appeared to ring up some personal expenses on a Republican Party of Florida credit card that was established for political purposes. The Herald and the Tampa Bay Times then discovered Rubio double-billed taxpayers and the RPOF card $3,000 for flights, the costs for which he then reimbursed the state.
Then, late last year, a Rubio critic alerted the press to the fact that the senator’s official website incorrectly said his parents fled Fidel Castro’s Cuba. They actually had fled dictator Fulgencio Batista’s Cuba.
Rubio is very young to be considered for a job that would put him only a heartbeat away from the most powerful job in the world.

He graduated from law school in 1996 and has never worked in the private sector.  His work experience includes being a City Commissioner for West Miami, serving in the Florida House of Representatives, and serving as a U. S. Senator.  And his senatorial experience is only since January 2011.  So he's only been in national politics for a year and a half.

With time and experience his future is very bright.  But some things need time to mature and grow.  Pushing too fast too soon could easily snuff out a career with great potential.

GOP House Leadership Plans To Fund Obamacare Implementation

Here’s the Nonsense:  The House has already voted numerous times to defund Obamacare.  They’ve made their stand on the issue and now should just get along to make the government run smoothly.

Here’s the Horse Sense:  If the GOP is to defeat Obamacare it must be defunded and repealed.  This can only happen if they will take a stand and never back down.  They must be true leaders to stop Obamacare and turn this country around.

We have another opportunity to stand against Obamacare and the GOP House leadership plans to drop the ball.  Yes, the GOP has vowed to repeal Obamacare. And yet now, as the money to operate the government is running out and action will need to be taken before Sept. 30th to continue its operation, they are talking of going along to get along.  This will automatically fund implementation of Obamacare.  The GOP House leadership, in its typical spineless manner, has no intention of adding provisions to the legislation that will keep Obamacare from being funded, thereby strengthening the foothold of the legislation and violating the religious conscience of many Americans.  In addition to electing a new president in November, it is critical that many members of the House and Senate be replaced.

This week Elizabeth Harrington and Jon Street of CNSNews.com reported that the GOP House leadership intended to fund the implementation of Obamacare.  They wrote:

When asked whether the House Republicans would permit or not permit funding for Obamacare in whatever legislation is enacted to fund the government after Sept. 30--when the current funding legislation runs out--House Speaker John Boehner responded that "our goal would be to make sure the government is funded," thus indicating that House Republicans do plan to fund implementation of Obamacare past Sept. 30.

So as usual, the wishy-washy GOP leadership’s version of taking a hard line is to go along to get along.  Here they have a perfect opportunity to win more voters for the November elections and they are too afraid to do it.  Polls have shown that 2/3 of Americans do not want Obamacare.  They can make this legislation to fund government beyond September 30th a battleground to win voters by standing on principle.  They can demand that any funding that is approved will not allow funding for Obamacare.  By doing so they will cause a stir in Washington about letting the government shut down.  However, the majority of Americans are opposed to Obamacare and by taking this stand they will attract some undecided voters over to their party.  Nothing is more attractive than someone who stands for principle.  And this is a principle that most Americans would embrace because they agree with it.

Of course the GOP won’t do this.  Many of them are so scared that they might upset someone that they will compromise to keep the government running.  They are too afraid of being accused of shutting down the government.  This is not leadership.  These are not the kind of people we need to turn this nation around.

In my new book, No Tomorrows: How To Halt America’s Imminent Collapse And Return To The American Dream – And Why It Must Start With The 2012 Elections, I show how to choose true leaders.  True leaders are the kind of leaders that stand on principle regardless of the cost.  This is sorely missing in our government.

Remember last August when the House voted to increase the debt limit?  Had they not increased the debt limit we would have been well on our way to solving one of the nation’s core problems.  That problem is our debt.  Our entire economy, jobs, and our financial well-being are all tied to our debt.  And the House controls the spending. If they don’t approve it the government is stuck.  All spending must go through the House or money cannot be spent.  It was an opportunity to exercise their clout and get spending under control.

So what happened last August?  The House voted to increase the debt ceiling and continued business as usual.  269 House members voted to support the debt ceiling increase while only 161 voted against it (3 didn’t vote on the bill).  In that vote 174 Republicans voted for the bill and only 66 voted against.  Click here to see more details on the vote breakdown including which members voted for and against the bill.

Only about 1/3 of Republican House members had the spine to hold their ground and stand against this bill.  The rest voted for business as usual with more debt and more enslavement of the American people.

So why should we expect the GOP to be any different now?  Yes, the GOP could put in a special provision in the bill to continue funding the government, but Boehner himself has said that that would be unusual.  He defends not taking a stand against Obamacare by saying that they’ve already voted separately 33 times to defund Obamacare.  So he thinks that that should send a clear enough message.

I’ve got news for Mr. Boehner.  When you stand firm it means you never budge.  Not once.  But Boehner doesn’t understand that.  He’s the king of compromise, which to him that means that he will do it the way the Democrats want.  And when it’s over he’ll say his usual, “When you do the right things for the right reasons, the right things happen.”  I think I’ll personally throw up the next time I hear that one.  It’s Boehner’s version of positive thinking and it’s nonsense.  He might as well go walk on some hot coals at a Tony Robbins meeting while he’s at it.

Remember, too, that even if you agree with the GOP leadership logic to just keep things going and not make a wave, if they allow the funding of Obamacare implementation in the continuing resolution they will be imposing severe religious discrimination against many Americans of faith.  August 1st the part of Obamacare that has the sterilization-contraceptives-abortifacient regulation goes into effect.  This puts many people of faith in precarious circumstances as our own government violates their religious freedom.

When asked about this issue Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy had a very disconcerting response.  Harrington and Street wrote:

CNSNews.com started to follow-up with the question, “So, if it comes down to either the government shutting down or you funding, the House Republicans funding Obamacare –”
McCarthy then said, “I don’t think you’re going to find any members here who are going to shut down the government.”

In other words, they don’t care and are going to allow it to happen.  What kind of leadership is this?  Okay, I’ll answer the question.  The answer is that it isn’t leadership.  It’s pathetic, spineless people cowering in fear.

And yet 127 Republican House members signed a letter to Speaker John Boehner and Majority Leader Eric Cantor saying, “[W]e urge you not to bring to the House floor in the 112th Congress any legislation that provides or allows funds to implement ObamaCare through the Internal Revenue Service, the Department of Health and Human Services, or any other federal entity. We also urge you to take legislative steps necessary to immediately rescind all ObamaCare-implementation funds.”

So we even have a larger number of Republicans standing against Obamacare funding than stood against raising the debt ceiling.

In No Tomorrows when I talk about understanding what a true leader is and then discuss the need for us to work hard to get those kinds of people into elected office.  If we had true leaders in office a problem like the funding of Obamacare would not even be happening.

The election in November is about so much more than the presidency.  It is also about the House and Senate.  It is very important that we get the best people available into office.  In some cases we may not have the best choices, but we still need to make the better choice and start to realign our government with better people.  Then, over time, we will begin to get more and more true leaders in office and they will turn our country around.  Don’t take the elections lightly.  Your future, your children’s future, and your grandchildren’s future depend on it.

The Question No One Is Asking About The Colorado Shooting Massacre

Here’s the Nonsense:  Once all the evidence is in and the experts analyze the culprit we’ll know precisely why this man did such a monstrous deed so we’ll be able to stop these things in the future.

Here’s the Horse Sense:  No one is asking the right questions and until we address the core underlying problem these things will continue to happen.

Here in Colorado the shooting massacre this past weekend shakes our entire state, but it also raises a national question that no one is asking.  Whenever a tragedy involving guns occurs there is an immediate outcry that the Second Amendment to the Constitution should be changed or redefined so that citizens can own few, if any, guns.  The logic is that if the Second Amendment did not allow the ownership of guns, then these tragedies wouldn’t happen.  So here’s the question I’ve heard no one ask:  If the Second Amendment is to blame for massacre’s like the one here in Aurora, CO  this past weekend, then why did it take two centuries for these things to start to happen?

For 221 years the Second Amendment has been part of the law of our land.  Weapons that could fire more than one bullet without being reloaded have been around since the mid-19th century.  And yet it’s only been during the last few decades that we’ve heard of these kinds of problems.  If owning guns is the cause of the problem, then why did it take so long before they started to occur?

We ignore the fact that for decades in the mid-19th and even early 20th century many, if not most citizens in communities in America carried guns, yet these types of events did not occur.

We ignore the fact that studies have clearly shown that communities where citizens are well armed have reduced crime.

We ignore the fact that in Aurora, Colorado citizens are subject to some of the toughest gun control laws in the nation and yet this massacre still happened.

Let’s set aside the fact that Chicago, which has some of the toughest gun control laws in the nation, has had 228 crime-related deaths year to date.

No one wants to deal with the fact that there are severe underlying problems in our society that need to be addressed or these kinds of incidents will never go away.

In my new book, No Tomorrows:  How To Halt America’s Imminent Collapse And Return To The American Dream – And Why It Must Start With The 2012 Elections, I identify the 3 core problems that America must solve in order to turn our nation around and then show how to fix them.  One of those problems is the breakdown of morality in our society.  Morality is more than just telling a lie or doing something dishonest.  Morality involves living with knowledge that there’s an absolute right and wrong that we are accountable for in our lives and acting on it.  One of the things that causes a breakdown in the moral core of our society is the breakdown of the family.

The tragic episode that happened in my backyard, Aurora, CO, this past weekend is an event that will take a long time to heal in our state.  No words can adequately speak to the loss the families and friends of the victims are going through.  No words can properly give credit to the young men who gave their lives to save the lives of others in that massacre.  Contrary to what the media want us to believe, we will never fully know or understand how this happened.  What I do know is that this was nothing but evil and it reminds us that evil is very real and must be taken seriously.

If we are going to deal with evil we must be willing to fix the things that are breaking down in our society in order to prevent them in the future.  Big problems can often be avoided if we catch the problem before it gets too large.  Fixing the moral core of our nation will change the value system adopted by many in our culture back to one that respects life and authority and ultimately returns our society to one of respect and compassion for life and safety for our communities.

The Obama Campaign Proves They Have No Substance By Their Attacks On Romney

Here’s the Nonsense:  Nothing is more important than finding out about Romney’s taxes and his record at Bain Capital.  The president’s demand for them shows his concern for America.  We need transparent politicians.

Here’s the Horse Sense:  We should be very concerned when a president won’t reveal anything about his past and yet demands that his competitor reveal everything.  The question should not be about Romney, but about what the president is hiding and because of it, why we should trust him.

The mainstream media is working hard to help the Obama campaign try to make the center focus of the campaign about their phony allegations regarding Romney’s tax returns and Bain history.  The continued allegations that Romney has done something wrong are not only nonsense with no evidence to support them, but continuing to pursue them reveals to any thinking person the fraud that is the Obama campaign.  This campaign, this presidency, this president has clearly shown that there is no substance to anything they do, they are about attacks based on inuendo, not fact.  Only a man who has no argument simply screams louder to make make their point.
Trying to villify Romney, the Obama campaign is clearly trying to keep the focus off of themselves.  The reason?  Because they have no positive record to stand on.  Facts are twisted or made up.  Their style is what Saul Alinsky taught, which is to make fun of and make false allegations againsts your competitor in order to kill their credibility.  That will keep people from taking them seriously and thereby give you the victory.

In my new book, No Tomorrows:  How To Halt America’s Imminent Collapse And Return To The American Dream – And Why It Must Start With The 2012 Elections, I reveal the Alinsky connections of Barack Obama.  Understanding who this president is must be a focus of this election because when you see who he is you begin to see through the smoke screen his campaign throws up to avoid focusing on his record and his background.  Since he has a background he wants kept hidden and has no positive record during his time as president to promote, he must destroy the credibility of Romney in order to keep Romney’s credibility in question and take the focus off of himself.
The impact of Alinsky and his views has become enormous in our political system.  Romney should be pointing out who he was and what it means.  But instead he allows Obama to harp on the release of his tax returns, which is a non-issue compared to the president himself and to make false allegations about his time at Bain Capital.  After all, the president has released virtually nothing about himself or his life and yet he claims to have the most transparent administration in history.  Somehow the media doesn’t see anything odd about this.

In psychology there’s something called projecting that anyone who’s ever taken Psychology 101 or been in counseling has probably heard of.  It is the practice of blaming others for what you’re guilty of.  It is often seen as a way to deflect a focus on you and make the focus go on someone else, even if that person is not guilty of it.  If you carefully listen to the president’s claims and accusations against people you will find that the things he usually accuses people of are the very things he is actually trying to cover up.  The suppression of personal records is a perfect example.  No president in American history has covered up more.
Obama’s school records from kindergarten all the way through law school are sealed and we know nothing about his education other than what he claims happened.  He has kept from the public virtually everything about his life.  In fact, it’s been pointed out that his own autobiography has at least 3 dozen lies in it about his past (see David Maraniss’s recent book, BarackObama: The Story, among other books that go even deeper to see what that is all about).  We know more about any and every American president’s life than we know about this president.

Mr. Romney should tell Mr. Obama that he will release more records when the president opens his school records, medical records, and other documents that he’s kept hidden from the public.
And the attacks on Romney’s record at Bain Capital are based on nothing but inuendo.  There is no evidence that Romney did anything wrong at Bain or that he committed any misdeeds.  Yet even though the Obama campaign knows this, they continue their attacks trying to discredit Romney in the eyes of the voters.  If Romney is smart he’ll take the offensive.  President Obama has said he won’t back off of this course of attack.  Romney needs to recognize that the president is fighting a war and is out to kill Romney’s candidacy.  Romney still sees Obama as a competitor in a contest.  He must adopt a different mindset if he is to win over Obama in November.
The media won’t hold the president accountable, but the voters can.  There should be an outcry from the public demanding equal treatment and accountability.  As I write in No Tomorrows, the imminent collapse of America is at hand.  We cannot survive 4 more years on the path we are on.  America as we know it is about to end and the only way to stop it is to use the election in November to change the control of the House and Senate in addition to who sits in the White House.  We have less than 4 months until the most important election of our lifetimes.  It is time for Americans to stand up and fight to save this nation.

President Obama, In Classic Alinsky Style, Continues To Mock The People Who Are Responsible For America’s Success

Here’s the Nonsense:  President Obama was right when he said that business owners didn’t build their business, somebody else did that.  Business owners take credit for success that isn’t theirs to take.

Here’s the Horse Sense:  President Obama was so far out of line in his disrespectful rant against business owners that he’ll be shocked at the outrage he’s caused.  He has bitten the hand that feeds America.

President Obama showed his true colors in a July 13th speech in Roanoke, VA.  His blasphemous attack on American businesspeople showed complete disdain for the very people who have done more for America than any other group of citizens.  His contempt for those who create jobs (the very ones who offer opportunity to America’s workers at a level far beyond any nation in history) was a look into the heart of a man who disrespects and shows disdain for those who are the backbone of what makes our economy sound.  This is a perfect example of what the influences of Barack Obama’s training in Saul Alinsky’s organizations has created in his attitudes towards America and what he believes our nation’s future should be.

Barack Obama has no understanding of business and how it has created the economic strength of America.  Sure, America is struggling financially in ways that no other nation ever has.  But those struggles are not due to American business.  Rather, they are due to uncontrolled spending and increasing debt brought on by politicians who are out of control.  The ONLY thing that has kept America going this long is American business.  And most American workers are working for small businesses.  Those businesses are the backbone of our nation and its greatness.

This is not to take anything away from the workers who work in businesses all across our nation.  They are a vital and important part of those businesses.  However, those who take the risks and invest their futures into businesses to make them work are the ones who are responsible for creating jobs.

President Obama needs to learn a little history.  The fact is that the great American Industrial Revolution came about because of the free market capitalist system under which we’ve lived.  Never before in history has business had the opportunities that America’s system has allowed.  When businesspeople started to create new and innovative products along with new ways to manufacture them, we started to see mass production.  At that time many things changed forever.

When companies were able to produce more goods they needed more employees to do so and this created jobs.  Many people were able to get consistent work and move up to the newly created middle class.  That was something that had never happened before and improved the standard of living for millions of people.  And as people moved up into the middle class more and more of them were able to start saving money and not just live from day to day.  People were able to start their own businesses and as they succeeded they moved their standard of living up further and further.

But Obama is a progressive. He is of the same school as many of today’s Democrats are.  In my new book, No Tomorrows: How To Halt America’s Imminent Collapse And Return To The American Dream – And Why It Must Start With The 2012 Elections,  I explain how Saul Alinsky influenced Barack Obama.  Alinsky’s book, Rules for Radicals, was said by Obama to be more important to him than anything he ever read or learned in school.

Alinsky was a Marxist who believed in nonviolent overthrow of the government through methods including class warfare where they could create social unrest between workers and business management.  The division between them could drive the workers to support his cause and thrust them into power.   This would allow them to move the American system from capitalism to socialism.  And in their socialist society a limited few elite would make your life decisions for you.  They will control everything and you will no longer have the freedoms that are unique to America compared to any nation in world history.

President Obama has disdain for America.  His statement in Roanoke, VA shows no respect for those in our society that have gambled everything to make businesses survive and thrive.  Obama believes that the only reason businesses succeed is because of government, which is exactly the opposite of what happens in real life.  Government puts burdens on businesses that cause them to struggle to survive and often fail, thereby reducing jobs, not increasing them.  It is no surprise that President Obama’s comments are causing huge resentment among those in America to which we should be thankful for their business creation.

Now it’s time to take that anger, resentment, and offended feelings and use them to drive us to work hard to change things in Washington this November.  Change is needed in the White House and Congress if we want to save this nation… and November can’t come soon enough.
