The Horse Sense Blog compares the nonsense in today's news with good ol' fashioned horse sense

“…I shall speak forth my sentiments freely and without reserve.… It is only in this way that we can hope to arrive at truth, and fulfill the great responsibility which we hold to God and our country. Should I keep back my opinions at such a time, through fear of giving offense, I should consider myself as guilty of treason towards my country, and of an act of disloyalty toward the Majesty of Heaven, which I revere above all earthly kings.” - Patrick Henry, March 23, 1775

For Those Who Think Romney’s RNC Speech Wasn’t Good Enough, Here’s A Pleasant Surprise

Here’s the Nonsense:  Mitt Romney’s speech at the RNC last night just wasn’t powerful enough to win people over.  If he can’t give speeches the caliber of Reagan and other great orators there’s no chance the Republicans can win the White House in November.

Here’s the Horse Sense:  Mitt Romney may not be the orator Reagan or some other politicians have been.  But the question is really whether he can connect with those who have not yet decided who they are going to vote for.

Some people are being critical of Mitt Romney’s acceptance speech at last night’s RNC convention in Tampa.  Some are even saying that he’s in real trouble when he’s up against Obama, who they say is such a great orator.  Their concern is that the moderates and independents who are undecided will vote for the best speaker, not the person with the best ideas for America.  But even though they are worried, it appears that their worries may be unfounded.

I have to say to those who think that Obama is such a great speaker that that is nothing but questionable.  When your only argument to get someone to support you is an attack on your competitor and you have no positive record of performance of your own to point to, you are in a very weak position regardless of how well you speak.  And the fact is that he really doesn’t speak that well or he wouldn’t need a teleprompter all the time, including when he speaks to elementary school students.  (I can’t get this image out of my head of him sitting at the dinner table with his family and whenever his daughters or wife ask him a question he has to look at a nearby teleprompter for what to say.  That image may be fictional, but it’s the result of his proven inability to communicate clearly without the help of technology.)

But more to the point, let’s talk about Mitt’s speech and what happened last night.  I know a few people around the country.  What I found interesting was that after Mitt’s speech last night and also this morning I started hearing from people I know in highly liberal areas like New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, DC.  I was told that people they knew who were liberals and couldn’t imagine voting for a Republican had watched Mitt’s speech and their reaction was that Mitt’s speech sold them on voting for him.  They saw a genuine man who didn’t try to wow them with a fancy speech or something that isn’t him.  They saw a man present to America a dream and desire to bring back America’s greatness and restore the American dream.  And with it, they learned that this man, who has had many, many more successes in his life than most people, is also a caring and compassionate man who wants for his family and all Americans the same opportunities that he has been blessed with.

In my new book, No Tomorrows:  How To Halt America’s Imminent Collapse And Return To The American Dream – And Why It Must Start With The 2012 Elections, I define the 3 core problems facing America and how to fix them.  One of those is our inability to choose good leaders, or as I like to call them, true leaders.  We have a leadership crisis in this country.  And it appears that the Romney/Ryan team recognize that.  And last night Mitt showed some of his leadership characteristics by choosing a method to present his argument that fit who he is perfectly.

It just may be that Mitt’s message, having been honestly and simply presented, was enough to reach many undecided voters and get them to understand that a man who is genuinely successful and knows how to fix things like the mess America is in is just what this country needs.

It’s hard to find anyone in America who doesn’t know someone who’s been impacted by the economy in our nation and is struggling to overcome it.  Mitt’s simple message appears to be a message that is resonating with many in America.  And when compared to the inexperienced man we have in leadership now the comparison of the two leaves an indelible image in your mind of experience and wisdom compared to youthful arrogance and ignorance.

No, as a marketing expert myself I can say that I would have opted for a different presentation to reach people, but I learned long ago that there isn’t just one way to reach people.  It appears that last night Mitt Romney took a different approach that may have been just as effective as anything a professional marketing expert like myself could have come up with.

America's future depends on the right decisions in this election.  That means not only in the presidential election but also in the congressional elections.  America will not survive another 4 years on the path we're on without collapse.  We must all choose to be involved and help to make the changes necessary to start our country on the long road we have ahead of us to turn this nation around and get back on track.  Get involved.  Don't take America for granted or the America we will end up with will not be anything like what you've come to know and love.

Republicans Miss The Point With Todd Akin

Here’s the Nonsense:  We cannot support a candidate who makes a mistake and says something that could harm their chance at election, no matter who they are.  This election is too important to allow any mistakes that could be attacked by the Democrats.  Todd Akin said something really stupid and we must distance ourselves from him as fast as possible.
Here’s the Horse Sense:  Todd Akin said something stupid and wrong.  But whether he should be abandoned as a candidate has nothing to do with saying something that could be attacked.  He tried to take an honorable stand for life and that’s the real issue.  Whether he is thrown under the bus will show us the kind of integrity (or lack thereof) that Republican leaders really have.
Republicans from Mitt Romney to John Ashcroft have suggested, encouraged, and demanded that Todd Akin drop out of his race in Missouri because of a mistake he made when talking about abortion.  While he was wrong in what he said about conception as a result of rape, the fact is that Republicans who have dropped their support of him are missing the real issue involved.
All the furor that has raged about Akin’s statement has focused on both the inaccuracy in his statement regarding conception as a result of rape and/or on the fact that this is embarassing to the Republican Party and could cost them the chance at winning the Senate.  Only a limited few people have stood up for Akin on the far more important issue, which is abortion.  Todd Akin made it clear that he believes that abortion, even in the case of rape and incest, is wrong.  He raises the question of why an innocent baby should be punished (killed) when the child did nothing wrong.  It’s a very valid question.
I realize that some people think that the trauma that the mother would go through to carry that child to term is the priority, but on this one I disagree.  Life is life.  Life trumps everything.  Nothing is more important than life and those who claim to be on the right side of the political aisle are screaming right now that we have a president who ignores the Constitution while some of those very same people want to ignore the Constitutional right of that child to life (Remember life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness?).  The very first right that the Constitution protects would be ignored when an abortion would be allowed.
Now I know there are people out there who are going to argue about the right of the woman who went through the trauma of rape or incest.  I don’t discount or disregard that at all.  But America was founded on the concept that life is a right and what right does anyone have to deny that right?  Some of those very people who believe that baby should be aborted are the same people who, if they saw a stranger about to be run over by a truck, would risk their own lives to save them.  We hear of people who save complete strangers from death, sometimes even giving their own lives to do so.  Are they wrong?  I think not.  I think they are showing us at our best.  And they are not all conservatives or republicans that do those things.  Saving life is human nature because we know deep in our hearts how important life really is.  It’s not about politics, it’s about giving someone a chance to live no matter what it costs.
Todd Akin said something really stupid.  He admitted it right away and asked for forgiveness.  Few people are giving him that forgiveness.  They are more interested in trying to win an election.  I don’t think what he said would have to be an election killer.  I don’t think measuring a man by one thing he says is proper.  I know nothing of the man.  I won’t pretend I do.  But my knee jerk reaction to this episode is that he is not getting a fair shake and in doing that to him, a voice to support the rights of the unborn could be silenced.  He might be the one person needed to take a stand that would make a difference in that fight.
The Republicans who shout for him to leave the race either don’t see that the stand for life is the single most important stand people can take, or they don’t care if life is protected.  They are afraid of taking an unpopular stand.  They are afraid of losing their positions of power.  We need leaders who are people of character who will take a stand regardless of the cost. In my new book, No Tomorrows: How To Halt America’s Imminent Collapse And Return To The American Dream – And Why It Must Start With The 2012 Elections, I talk about the character traits of true leaders.  One of those traits is doing what’s right regardless of the cost.  Without that character trait no one is a true leader… even if it means losing an election.
Joe Biden can make mistake after mistake and the Democrats continue to support him.  Barack Obama not only makes mistake after mistake, he continually violates the Constitution and they continue to support him.  Bill Clinton broke the law by lying under oath and lost his law license for a period of time.  He is also known for his wayward ways and has had horrendous accusations made against him regarding sexual activity.  And still he is seen as an icon to be respected by the Democrats.  But Todd Akin makes what boils down to a silly statement about conception as a result of rape, yet takes a hard line stand to protect life and he is abandoned by the Republicans.   Akin has done nothing that comes close to comparing to what these Democrat leaders have done and yet he’s being punished far more than they ever will be.
I’m sure I’ll hear people say to me that we can’t afford to lose this election.  I would agree, unless it costs us our values.  We must stand for what is right, even if it means we watch our nation continue down the path it is on and we lose our future as the nation collapses.  Nothing is more important than character.  Nothing.

Good News: Romney/Ryan Will Be A Polarizing Duo In The Election

Here’s the Nonsense:  The Republicans are in serious trouble if they allow the Romney/Ryan campaign to be polarizing.  They will lose voters and drive people to the Democrats.

Here’s the Horse Sense:  This election has to be about the future of our nation.  The only way to assure that voters get educated and involved is to get their attention about the crisis we face.  Romney/Ryan can only do that be being polarizing and offering ideas that make Americans realize the dangers our nation faces if we stay on our current path.  The Romney/Ryan campaign is very wise to boldy speak the truth and make this election about ideas, not false promises.
If you haven't seen Barack Obama and his administration as polarizing, then clearly you’re not paying attention.  With a nation in so much trouble that we face imminent collapse if we do not make serious changes in this election, it is critical that this election be about clear choices.  But if the electorate are not involved enough to study the issues and make informed decisions, then the election needs more polarization to get people to see the drastic differences between the failed efforts of the president’s administration and what the Republicans have to offer.

To that end Mitt Romney unveiled a decision on Saturday that is said to polarize this election by choosing Paul Ryan as his running mate.  That decision is critical if America has a chance at making the necessary decisions in this election.  Kudos to Mitt Romney for having the wisdom to clearly delineate the differences between the solutions he offers compared to the failed efforts and boundless unkept promises of Barack Obama.

In my new book, No Tomorrows: How To Halt America’s Imminent Collapse And Return To The American Dream – And Why It Must Start With The 2012 Elections, I define the 3 core problems that cause America to face imminent collapse and also the solutions to those problems.  Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan are articulating some of those solutions in their campaign.  They are taking a stand of courage to not just suggest solutions, but to put them in front of Americans and educate them as to the future we face if we don’t take drastic actions immediately.

Some are already raising the issue of some votes that Paul Ryan made for TARP, the auto bailout, and AIG bonuses.  He certainly needs to be held accountable for those actions, but we would be wrong to not hear the whole story before we make our conclusions.  To hear Ryan's response to those questions click here to read an interview with the Daily Caller responding to them.
President Obama has done more damage to this nation than any president in history.  Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan understand that it’s time to make hard decisions instead of living with a pie-in-the-sky mentality that we can continue to spend without limits and not feel the consequences of those decisions.  They understand that if we don’t make changes now we will not be able to turn things around in the future.  This is the last chance we have before America goes off the cliff with no turning back.  President Obama only offers to press harder on the gas pedal to increase speed towards that cliff.

The Latest Unsubstantiated Attack On Romney

Here’s the Nonsense:  Once again the media has produced questions that should force Mitt Romney to release his tax returns.  We cannot go on in this election without knowing what it is that he is hiding.

Here’s the Horse Sense:  Once again the media are joining Obama’s campaign of attack against Romney based on questionable assertions.  As usual, they are using insiders pretending to be outsiders to try to put pressure on Romney’s campaign and keep attention off of Obama’s failed record.
Another attack on Mitt Romney has surfaced to lead people to believe unproven allegations.  It is a fact that the Obama campaign and Super PACs supporting him are using every trick, lie, and inuendo they can to keep attention off the terrible record of performance and legally questionable activities this administration has been involved in during the past 3.5 years.  And not to be left out of the effort, the mainstream media is jumping on the bandwagon at every opportunity to help.  The latest is an effort to drag Romney down with these claims in their effort to get their guy, President Obama, reelected.

What is nothing more than another typical hit piece against Mitt Romney.  Peter Canellos and Edward Kleinbard have introduced the idea that Mitt Romney’s personal tax returns are hiding something because of a tax shelter utilized by Marriott during the 1990s when Romney was chairman of the audit committee for the firm.  Marriott utilized a tax shelter known as Son of Boss and as chairman of the audit committee Romney was required to sign off on Marriott’s actions.
The IRS, the authors state, considered the shelter abusive and successfully challenged the use of it by some companies.  Canellos and Kleinbard try to link the idea that since Marriott chose to utilize this type of tax shelter that that implies that Romney probably has things in his personal taxes that should be questioned, therefore it is important for him to release his tax returns.

Now I’m no tax expert and I’ve never utilized a tax shelter.  But I do know enough about business to know that companies, especially large ones, often utilize a variety tax sheltering programs to try to retain income.  However, these firms have accounting firms that sign off on these things and are also responsible in the transactions.  In addition, companies realize that choosing to utilize these things are subject to IRS scrutiny and challenge.  If they do get challenged and lose in court, then there are additional costs they will incur beyond taxes owed.  So the companies know that there is a risk in utilizing something they may have trouble defending.
Most large companies utilize very major accounting firms, which are not known for taking too much risk.  How many accountants do you know who are wild, crazy, risk takers?  I’ve known a few accountants in my life and generally they’re pretty subdued and cautious individuals.  And even if Marriott chose to utilize something that may get challenged, it does not mean that Mitt agreed with it.  As chairman of the audit committee he had responsibility and accountability.  That does not mean that Marriott handed complete and final control over to him.  They could choose to use something that he personally wasn’t fond of and would never use in his own company or personal life.  Generally the questions the audit committee and its chairman would raise about it would be whether those choosing this shelter believed it to be legal and defendable if challenged.  If the employees and accountants suggesting its use present a good case to the committee, then most likely it would be approved, knowing that it would still be subject to challenge by the IRS.  But to try to tie the choice of Marriott utilizing this type of shelter to Mitt’s personal taxes is nothing but another attempt to take the attention off of Obama’s record and keep the Romney campaign on the defensive.

And if you think this Canellos and Kleibard are being objective, it should be noted that according to Yahoo News “Canellos and Kleinbard have participated in press conference calls hosted by the Democratic National Committee to attack Romney, and each has donated significant sums to Democrats in election campaigns, Federal Election Commission records show.”  So much for objective journalism.
And by the way, President Obama is a big believer in government.  He acts as though it can do no wrong and is the savior of mankind (a really foolish assumption for a guy who is supposed to be the smartest man to ever hold the office of president).  With all his confidence in the government, why doesn’t he believe that the IRS has done their job and caught Mitt Romney in all these supposed illegal tax deals that they are accusing him of?

But even more importantly, and as I stated in another recent post, this president has sealed and kept from public view more personal records than any president in American history.  In fact, you could probably add up all personal records sealed by every president in history and it would be less than Obama has sealed regarding his own past.  In fact, it’s been reported that he’s spent approximately $4 million in court keeping his personal records sealed from the public.  Everything from his kindergarten records through records of his entire schooling, his passport records, his medical records, his law practice records in Chicago, and many others, it is reported, have been kept from public access.  The question isn’t whether Mitt Romney has done something wrong, since he’s been far more open about his life and background than President Obama.  The question is what does President Obama have to hide and why aren’t the media demanding answers.

Any voter who doesn’t understand that has not done their homework.  And this election, more than any in history, it is critical that we do our homework and see to it that our nation gets the changes it needs to save it from collapse.  Four more years of the path we’re on and we will not survive.  In my new book, No Tomorrows: How To Halt America's Imminent Collapse And Return To The American Dream - And Why It Must Start With The 2012 Elections, I identify the 3 core underlying problems facing America and then present how to fix those problems.  This problem of negative campaigns is just a symptom of the much deeper core problems.  If we fix the core problems, these problems will take care of themselves.

Harry Reid’s Claim Romney Didn’t Pay Taxes Is An Attempt To Deflect Attention From Obama’s Record

Here’s the Nonsense:  Harry Reid claims to have credible information that Romney didn’t pay taxes for 10 years.  Romney better release his taxes to prove he paid them.

Here’s the Horse Sense:  Harry Reid is doing nothing more than deflecting attention away from Obama and pulling an attorney’s courtroom stunt should be seen through by every voter.

Harry Reid’s claims that Mitt Romney hasn’t paid taxes for 10 years is the same as an attorney trying to plant doubt in the minds of a jury, regardless of whether the claim is true.  Harry isn’t interested in truth.  He’s interested only in diverting attention from the real issues of the campaign that are too destructive to President Obama.

Have you ever watched a TV drama where an attorney is in a courtroom and wants to deflect attention from an issue regarding the defendant that he represents?  The attorney asks a question of a witness that implies something outrageous and causes the prosecution to immediately object.  The judge steps up and warns the defense attorney that he’s crossing a line and then tells the jury to disregard what they’ve just heard.  Do you really think that jury will be able to put out of their minds what they just heard?  Of course not.  They may think they can, but their thoughts have been tainted.  A slight doubt has been put in their minds and that’s enough to help move them to side with the defense.

That’s exactly what Harry Reid is doing with his continued ridiculous calls for Mitt Romney’s tax returns while claiming that Mitt hasn’t paid any taxes in 10 years.  The hypocrisy of this effort when Reid’s candidate, President Obama, has more information sealed and kept hidden about his background than probably every president in U. S. history combined.

The outrageousness of the claim should be enough for any thinking voter to reject it and only remember which side lowered themself to such a level to besmirch the name of their competitor.

Voters need to remember that Romney's been running for elective office for years with his eye on the presidency for a long time.  He’s known for running a clean, careful business operation.  Why would a guy who's so successful and careful in his business life be so stupid as to not pay his taxes for ten years if he plans to try to be president?

And it also needs to be remembered that Romney owned Bain as a private firm.  It has been claimed that this source of Reid’s is a Bain executive.  Information about personal taxes would not be available to people in the company, even people in management.  So why should we believe it when Reid claims his source has this knowledge?

Add to those types of questions that Reid’s not exactly been known as a man of credibility and the real question should be, “What is he trying to deflect attention from?”

The answer to that question is that he’s trying to help the President’s reelection efforts by deflecting from Obama’s terrible record, the failing economy, the joblessness in the nation, and virtually every aspect of the job he’s done while in office.

The only chance the Obama campaign has of getting the president reelected is to keep the discussion off of his record and keep focusing attention on anything else they can to hurt Romney’s credibility.

In my new book, No Tomorrows: How To Halt America’s Imminent Collapse And Return To The American Dream – And Why It Must Start With The 2012 Elections, I reveal why this is a standard tactic for the Democrats, especially Obama.  He was trained by Saul Alinsky’s organization and one of their standard tactics is to destroy credibility of competitors with truth or falsehood.  Their goal is to overthrow our capitalist system and introduce a Marxist socialist state to replace it where they determine everything about your life. They believe they know better what’s best for you than you do.  They want to control every aspect of your life.

Attention to the damage Obama’s already done to our nation must be at the forefront of discussion in this election.  Both he and those who have supported his actions in the Democrat and Republican parties need to be replaced with American patriots who will work tirelessly to help turn our nation around and stop the madness that will bring down our nation before the end of the next presidential term if we don’t do so.

And by the way, Romney should not release any more information until the president releases his school records and transcripts, medical records, and passport records.  Then maybe we'll know a little more about his background so that his qualifications for the job he's done so poorly at can be evaluated before this election.

The Tea Party Is Back And Growing Stronger

Here’s the Nonsense:  The Tea Party had its 15 minutes of fame in the 2010 election and has been dwindling ever since.  It’s time for those annoying people to give up, go home, and accept that the establishment political powerhouse is what controls politics in America.

Here’s the Horse Sense:  The Tea Party is not only still around, it is prospering as more and more Americans are realizing that this government is out of control on both sides of the aisle.  Their impact in the upcoming November elections will be gigantic.
Contrary to the desires of the mainstream media, Democrats, and establishment Republicans, the Tea Party and other like-minded groups are growing and prospering.  Their detractors thought that the rallies a few years ago were all the Tea Party was good for.  Their detractors think the movement is dying when, in reality, they’ve only just begun to grow.
The establishment political powerhouse in America is made up of the Democrats, establishment Republicans (also know as the country club Republicans), and their cheerleaders which are the mainstream media.  They have controlled the political process in America for generations.  They don’t really believe that anything can come along to challenge their power, authority, or control.
When the Tea Party started a few years ago the establishment watched the rallies and thought they’d go away.  And to aid in their demise they started attacking them as radicals and racists.  They think the Tea Party and the Occupy Movement are the same from different ends of the political spectrum.  But they are wrong.  The Tea Party is a conviction-driven movement of citizens who have actually developed a plan and are moving it forward for the betterment of America.  They aren’t just about rallies (which their detractors think are the same as Occupy’s protests).  They are about a plan to save America and bring it back under control of the citizens.
Recent wins in primaries around the nation are showing us that the Tea Party is having a huge impact once again, just like in 2010.  Americans are fed up and joining together to end the good ol’ boy political network in Washington.  They realize this is a long term project and can’t happen in one election cycle.  But unlike the Occupy Movement, they are more than just about a public rally to gain attention.  From their inception these groups have made plans and been executing them to move America back to its conservative roots.  They see that America has moved far to the left and desire to bring back balance to the political process.  That’s also why so many Tea Party members are not Republicans, but come from Democrat or Independent backgrounds.  They are truly the coming together of American citizens who are setting petty differences aside to work for the future of their children by trying to return America to the country it once was.
The Tea Party has been working hard since their beginning to reach out to people of all backgrounds and come together under the banner of what’s best for America’s future, not “how can we divide ourselves more” which is what the establishment political machine in Washington has done and continues to do.  They talk about things that most all Americans can relate to.  Such things as high taxes, distrust of government, political corruption, and wasteful spending are concerns of citizens who have traditionally embraced both parties.  But the Tea Party understands that these are issues that bring people together, not divide them.  And their work to bring citizens together to work to fix those types of problems is why people of all backgrounds are joining in.  They’ve even been successful in getting strange bedfellows working together.  For example, in Georgia they fought a tax increase for a transportation bill and worked side by side with the NAACP and the Sierra Club.  They were outspent 266 to 1 and still won getting the bill to go down in defeat.
Contrary to what the mainstream  media would have you believe, the Tea Party is made up of people of all backgrounds and ethnic groups.  In fact, the attempts by the media and Democrats to depict the Tea Party as racist ignores the obvious fact that many ethnic groups are involved in these groups and many of the new heroes and rising stars in their leadership are people who are members of ethnic minorities.  The claim that they’re racist makes the accusers look more and more foolish as people realize who the people are that make up the Tea Party.  As America’s greatness has come from its inclusiveness of people from all backgrounds as they came to this country to seek a better future, the Tea Party is a mirror image of that same blending of peoples from different backgrounds ethnically and culturally.
The real message to the establishment politicians of both parties and to the mainstream media is that Americans want their country back and they’re not going to sit back and watch as it continues down the destructive path it is on.  In my new book, No Tomorrows:  How To Halt America’s Imminent Collapse And Return To The American Dream – And Why It Must Start With The 2012 Elections, I address the 3 core problems that are destroying America and how to fix them to turn the nation around.  One of those is our choice of leaders and how to choose the right people to lead.  The Tea Party recognizes this quite clearly and they give us hope for the future as we see the people they are pushing to the forefront of the political process.
There’s a lot of work to do, especially in the next 3 months before this upcoming election.  But with hard work and the efforts of the Tea Party types of groups we can see control of the political process returned to the American people.  It’s critical that everyone get involved and work hard.  The damage that has been done to our nation by the current group of politicians is about to destroy our nation.  This election is our last chance to start the turn around of the country.  We cannot miss this opportunity.
