The Horse Sense Blog compares the nonsense in today's news with good ol' fashioned horse sense

“…I shall speak forth my sentiments freely and without reserve.… It is only in this way that we can hope to arrive at truth, and fulfill the great responsibility which we hold to God and our country. Should I keep back my opinions at such a time, through fear of giving offense, I should consider myself as guilty of treason towards my country, and of an act of disloyalty toward the Majesty of Heaven, which I revere above all earthly kings.” - Patrick Henry, March 23, 1775

Obama's First Compromise?

Here's the Nonsense:  President Obama is really trying to help America and is open to ideas that may differ from his own to fix America's economic problems.  That's why he's meeting with Mitt Romney to see if he can find some good ideas he can use to help fix America.

Here's the Horse Sense:  Anyone who thinks that President Obama is meeting with Mitt Romney to consider some of his ideas to help the country is a fool.  Obama only does things for his own benefit, not for that of the nation.  This is only a show to be able to use it to his own political advantage.

President Obama has scheduled a private meeting for Thursday with Mitt Romney.  They will meet at the White House with no press coverage.  The Obama administration claims that they are keeping a promise made in Obama's victory speech on November 6th.  In that speech he promised to meet with Romney to consider his ideas to help America's financial crisis.

The ideas we're talking about are Romney's drastically different views than Obama's on how to avoid the fiscal cliff and get the economy moving again.  Obama has steadfastly held to the idea that increasing taxes is the answer compared to Romney's campaign position that cutting taxes would do more to stimulate the economy.

What's interesting about this meeting is that anyone might actually think it's legitimate.  Why Romney would fall for it is not clear.  President Obama has never considered any Republican ideas about anything.  His idea of meeting to consider someone's ideas is that the other person will change their position and agree with him.  Obama not only thinks he knows more than anyone else (he is known in Washington as the guy who thinks he's the smartest man in the room), he has consistently during his time in office accused Republicans of not being willing to negotiate while he doesn't move at all on his positions.  Compromise to President Obama means that the other party will change and agree with him.  So why would it be any different this time?

Republicans are truly stupid if they think there will be any movement on Obama's part.  Most likely Obama will try to convince Romney to go along with his ideas.  He may use the reasoning that it's for the country to have unity and not be so partisan, or some other guise to try to get Romney to go along with it.  Whatever happens behind closed doors, Obama will use it for his own political purposes to paint a picture of how open-minded he is.  If Romney won't go along with him he'll use it to try to show Republicans as obstructionist.  If Romney does go along with it Obama will try to use it to show that key Republicans support him.  No matter what happens behind closed doors Obama will spin it to make himself look good and Republicans look bad.

This is a man who doesn't understand the first thing about economics.  Remember, he himself said that he wasn't any good with math beyond a 7th grade level (although sadly it doesn't take even a 7th grade level of math to understand economics enough to know the economy is not being handled correctly).  He says that taxing "the rich" will fix our problems.  Yet we are a nation with a president that spends far more than $1 trillion each year than we have in income.  And he thinks that taxing the rich will fix the problem.

Obama's tax-the-rich-plan would bring in an additional $85 billion in annual revenue.  But Obama's government is spending more than $1 trillion a year more than we bring in.  Obama's solution won't even scratch the surface in dealing with our problems.  And since most people won't seriously look at the math they assume his solution will work.  The difference between $85 billion and $1 trillion is huge.  Here's a way to explain it in a more understandable way:

Instead of money, let's use time to see how different it is.  If we went back in time 85 billion seconds it would be 683 BC.  If we went back 1 trillion seconds it would be 29,700 BC.  We are in so deep that the only thing that can fix our problems is to cut spending.  And we're not doing that.

When Congress tells us they are cutting spending they are being very dishonest about it.  Their cuts are not really cuts at all because spending keeps going up.  They use something called baseline budgeting where the government plans on an automatic increase each year in each expense.  Budgetary items are not required to be justified expenses each year.  They are automatically considered to be an expense the next year.  On top of this they get an automatic increase each year.

When Congress says they have cut spending they are not actually cutting the amount they are spending, they are cutting the amount of increase in spending.  So if, for example, an item is increased 7% automatically and they cut that to 6%, then Congress tells us that they cut spending by 1% when, in reality, all they've done is reduced the amount of planned increase.  That is how baseline budgeting works.

If, on the other hand, they were to switch to zero-based budgeting then not only is there no automatic increase each year, each item must be justified as a legitimate expense each year.  The result is that you can control expenditures and reduce spending.  Since most people in Congress are not interested in making that kind of change, they should be replaced.

America must hold its elected representatives accountable and starting immediately must work harder than ever to get new people to represent us in Congress in the 2014 mid-term elections.  It's our only hope... and after seeing how citizens did not do the right thing in the presidential election, it's a very slim hope that they will choose to do the right thing in the mid-terms.  We are in big trouble in America and unless citizens start to accept responsibility and hold politicians accountable there is no way to stop the collapse of our nation and save it for our children.

Republican Idiocy: Pushing To Pick A 2016 Candidate

Here's the Nonsense:  The Republicans just failed in their attempt to get Romney elected.  It's time to pick up the pieces and get right back in the contest and start working on the 2016 election.

Here's the Horse Sense:  This isn't about jumping right back on the horse that just threw you off.  Rather, it's about figuring out what they are doing wrong and fixing it or they won't ever have a chance at winning again.

Less than 3 weeks after the election the Republicans are pushing to pick their candidate for the 2016 presidential election 4 years from now.  Clearly they haven't learned any lessons from the beating they just took.  Instead of taking a long serious look at their failures in election after election with candidates like Dole, McCain, and Romney, they continue on their path of self-destruction.  Their actions show they know nothing about relationship building.  And if you can't learn to do that voters won't want to have a relationship with you.

This is not riding a horse where you need to get up off the ground after you've been thrown and get back on right away.  That is done so that you don't develop a fear of riding, not so that you'll have a good relationship with the horse.

I remember the first time I was thrown off a horse when I started riding.  That horse bucked me off and I went head first over his head and crashed into a fence post and came down on my tail bone cracking it and causing what ended up being years of pain.  My arm had been smashed into the old fence post and it had torn it up with a huge gash and caused blood to be pouring down my arm.  As I laid on the ground a friend who was an old cowboy was there and he walked over and helped me up.

As bloody and bruised as I was, my pride was even more hurt.  That was embarrassing.  I didn't learn to ride until I was in my 30s and I felt really stupid. My old cowboy friend grabbed a rag and handed it to me to wipe the blood off to see how bad the gash in my arm was.  My tail was hurting (no, not my rear end, the bottom of my spine where your tailbone is) but I thought it was just a bruise.  A week or so later I finally went to the doctor and found out I'd fractured it and it would be a long, slow, painful healing process.  For years I was hurting when I'd sit the wrong way or in one position too long.  And travel where I'd be stuck in a seat for a couple hours or more was excruciating.

Back at the scene of the accident right after it happened my friend immediately caught the horse and told me to get on it and go for a ride.  I wasn't feeling much like riding right then but my friend said, "I have spent my life on horseback and the worst thing you can do is walk away.  You MUST get on that horse right now before you think too much about it.  If you don't, you'll dwell on this and become afraid and probably never ride again.  You have to conquer the fear before it shows up."  So, I climbed back up and spent the next hour on that horse.  And you know what?  He was right.  I still was a bit spooked for a while when I'd ride, but each time I got a little more confidence.  And I realized that I might never have gotten back on that horse if it wasn't for that old cowboy.

Sounds just like the thing the Republicans should do regarding losing an election, right?  WRONG!  It's the wrong analogy.  Political candidates and political parties aren't supposed to be trying to ride a horse, so to speak.  That would mean that they are seeing the voter as the horse and are trying to control the voter to do what they want instead of what the voter wants to do.

The proper analogy is a courtship for marriage.  In an effective and good courtship you want to woo and interest that potential spouse into a relationship.  You want to be open and honest and never be dishonest or disrespectful.  You want to build trust and you want to do all this with someone of same values and beliefs if you really want to have a good and long term relationship.  When you do you have a much better chance of finding someone who's interested in marrying you and it succeeding.  That isn't done by controlling them like you do a horse when you go for a ride.

And when that relationship fails and you break up with that person you were hoping to spend your life with the worst thing you can do is jump right back in to another relationship.  When you do you are greatly increasing your chances of failure.  If you really do want a long term relationship with someone you need to recover and learn from what happened.

The first thing you need to understand is that you made mistakes.  Sure, we always want to think it wasn't our fault when a relationship fails but the fact is that in a relationship there are two people and both people are at fault.  One party may hold more fault than the other, but there is still responsibility on both sides.  If we want to recover, be healthy, and make ourselves the best we can be for success in a future relationship then we need to take time and seriously examine where we failed.  We must discern what went wrong, figure out which party was responsible for what, and then apply the lessons from the mistakes we made to our lives.  Then we will be a new and better person and ready to try again.  But if we skip that process we will simply do what most people do, and that's to repeat the same mistakes over and over again.

Did you know that the statistic we always hear that 50% of marriages end in divorce really isn't an accurate representation of what happens?  Years ago I read a study about marriage failure and it said that actually 40% of first marriages fail, 60% of second marriages fail, and 70% of third marriages fail.  And the reason was because people don't try to learn from the previous experience, improve themselves, and work to avoid making the same mistakes again.  Instead, they marry into the same kinds of problems they did before and the situation backfires on them and the marriage fails and usually does it even faster than the first time.

So, if the Republicans want to learn from their failures it's time for some self-examination and introspection.  What we do know is that the establishment Republicans are already pushing to get people like Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio as candidates to be considered.  They talk about Bush's favorability in Florida as governor, which is quite high, and never forget to mention his hispanic wife.  They talk about Marco Rubio not because he's acceptable on all levels (after all, he is somewhat conservative, which they don't like) but most importantly to them he is hispanic.  They think these candidates will win elections because of ethnic background in their families.  That's a stupid idea because historically Republicans don't win with hispanics, even when they do things like President Reagan did and give amnesty to huge numbers of them.

To counter the establishment's ideas, more conservative Republicans are talking about people like Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal.  He's certainly doing well as governor and is a conservative who has good things to offer.  Others are thinking of such people as Kentucky Senator Rand Paul because of his libertarian leanings similar to his father and some are even mentioning moderates like New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.

Whether it's these people or other names who've run before being resurrected to run again doesn't matter at this point.  The Republican party has much bigger problems.  There is a huge split in the party about where they should go. The establishment wants to move the party to the left and become even more like Democrats than they've already become.  (Remember that today's political parties are far to the left of what they were a few decades ago.  John Kennedy wouldn't qualify to be a Democrat today. The Republican party of today is more like Kennedy's Democrat party of his day.

Real soul searching needs to be done by the Republicans if they are to unify and have a chance to win again.  Personally I believe that unless they move to the right and stand by the principles upon which the party was built they will continue to fail.  We will continue to see our national politics be more of a one party system than a two party system.  Republicans on state levels that have moved back to the right are winning big in state elections.  More Republican governors have been elected than Democrats by a large margin.  But the national party doesn't get it.

If the national party doesn't seriously consider what's happening and get control away from the moderate consultants and establishment Republicans they will watch as the conservative and libertarian leaning members leave the party and form a new one.  And without them the Republicans have absolutely no chance of winning.  We just saw proof of it on November 6th when many of them stayed home, others wrote in other names on the ballot, and still others chose to vote for 3rd party candidates.

No, this isn't about getting back on the horse that just threw you off.  This is learning why your relationship with the voters keeps failing and learning what to change to make them be attracted to you.

Union Led By Ding Dongs Forces Hostess Out Of Business While Others Are Leading The U. S. In The Same Direction

NOTE: This post updated on 11-20-12 and 11-22-12 at end of post below.

Here’s the Nonsense:  The workers in America need to stand up to businesses to give them what they deserve or be forced out of business.

Here’s the Horse Sense:  It’s time for Americans to understand how an economy really works and quit believing the nonsense the schools, unions, and politicians are selling.  America is about to go the same route as companies like Hostess unless something is done right away.

What part of “there is no money” don’t people understand?  Not only do the majority of citizens not understand the financial disaster that is coming down on us like an avalanche, but those who are leading us are aiding in that ignorance.  And it’s not just those who lead us politically, but it’s also in other areas, too.  From educators to union leaders we see so many people in our society that don’t understand the first thing about how a successful economy functions and what is needed for it to flourish.  And the sad part is that they are imposing their errant understanding on our youth and now, after decades of this happening, we have a large part of our society with little or no understanding of the mess we’ve gotten ourselves into and how to get out of it.  A perfect example is what has just happened with Hostess Brands.

Hostess Brands, the maker of those wonderful snacks like Twinkies, Ding Dongs, and Ho Hos along with all the great products from their other brands like Wonder Bread, Dolly Madison, Home Pride and others that we remember from childhood has been forced out of business.  Tyler Durden wrote at about their bankruptcy filing for liquidation with the explanation for such action as being:

"...insurmountable (and unfundable) difference in the firm's collective bargaining agreements and pension obligations, which resulted in a crippling strike that basically shut down the company. In other words, Twinkies may well survive the nuclear apocalypse, but there was one weakest link: the company making them, was unable to survive empowered labor unions who thought they had all the negotiating leverage...  until they led their bankrupt employer right off liquidation cliff."

To put it simply, Hostess was trapped by rising costs, narrow margins due to the competitiveness of their industry, and after working to reduce whatever costs they could to meet necessary overhead costs and get bankruptcy court approval they had to turn to their labor force and ask for concessions in their labor contracts.  However, one union refused what is reported to be an 8% pay cut.   Hostess gave them until November 15 to accept the offer or, as Hostess management warned them, the company would have to shut down and liquidate its assets.

A union refused the offer and Hostess management had no choice but to shut down their business.  The union won, but in a very shallow victory.  Instead of retaining jobs for over 18,000 people with a slight cut in income, they stood strong and got a victory that left those 18,000 people without work.
I don’t know about you, but I have found that sometimes things get tough in life.  Sometimes things aren’t fair.  Sometimes you have to make hard decisions.  If my business gets slow my income drops.  I have to make choices.  I can’t keep living at the same level that I have when things are going better.  So, for example, instead of steak for dinner I may have to have a peanut butter sandwich, macaroni and cheese, rice and beans, or something else that costs less.  It’s not that I want to, but I have to save money or I will lose everything.

That is exactly what Hostess and its employees faced.  Hostess offered to give them most of what had been promised and explained what would happen if they didn’t accept the offer.  The union thought, as the old saying goes, that they could get blood out of a turnip and refused.  Now they lose everything.  Not a very smart move was it?  It’s all because of stupidity and stubbornness.  Great job union bosses, you bunch of ding dongs!  (By the way, I’d like to apologize to the Hostess Ding Dongs for calling the union leaders that name.  The tasty treat from Hostess deserves to be respected, unlike the union leaders.)

Reading about it now after the fact it may seem that the union should have given in because 92% of something is a whole lot better than 100% of nothing, but oddly many people think Hostess was wrong.  There's even a petition that's been submitted to the White House for the government to bail out Hostess, which would do nothing other than compound the problem.  There is a misunderstanding on the part of many in America that corporations have deep pockets and that the fault is all because the companies are keeping those profits for owners and executives while workers starve.  I doubt there could be a more nonsensical thought about economics uttered.  One commenter on Durden’s article wrote:

"This [is] only the beginning. The workers are rising up against the capitalists trying to sell us expensive goods and offer us low wage jobs. We’re going to SHUT THESE BASTARDS DOWN one by one until we get what we want. The people want RAISES and they don’t care where the money comes from. This is the start of the progressive revolution. Capitalism and entrepreneurship is dead, and the golden age of collective bargaining has begun."

This should send a cold chill down the spine of every thinking American patriot.  It is the kind of stupidity believed by the progressive left and being taught to our children in schools these days.  In fact, it’s been taught in our school systems for decades and now become so ingrained in the thinking of people who’ve grown up being taught this garbage that when kids come home from school and talk like this their parents just nod in agreement and think to themselves that the corporate bullies sure make life tough for people and do it on the backs of the working class.

I’m not young anymore.  I’m a baby boomer but I remember growing up in the liberal progressive school systems of Minnesota.  We had great school systems for quality of education, but I can honestly say that looking back I’m surprised I survived the radical nonsense that was taught.  The idea of the unions being the savior of the working class today and the management being the enemy was taught throughout my school years.  I had teachers in junior and senior high school and professors in college who were proud that they thought communists had better systems of government than the United States does.

Thankfully I had a father who was a businessman who didn’t just tell me, he got me actively involved in business from a young age to learn the truth through experience.  I started my first business while in school to finance my education.  I learned more about the economy and business doing that than I ever learned in school.  Don’t get me wrong, there were many good things about school, but being indoctrinated in progressive ideology was not just wrong, it was dangerous.  And that is one of the reasons our society has so many people today who believed and agreed with Barack Obama when he said during the campaign that if you own a business you didn’t build that.  That’s absolute rubbish.  These people know no more about starting and running a business than a hedgehog (and the hedgehog may actually know more).

In my recent book, No Tomorrows:  How To Halt America’s Imminent Collapse And Return To The American Dream – And Why It Must Start With The 2012 Elections, I warned that we face imminent collapse if we continue on the fiscal path that Barack Obama and his Democrat Party along with the establishment Republicans had us on.  He won the recent election and we are not only still on that path, he and his cronies on both sides of the aisle in Congress have already shown that they intend to accelerate the pace they have America headed.

The news talks about trying to avert the fiscal cliff, but no one is paying attention to the fact that our nation has already gone over the fiscal cliff.  When the president and Congress talk about averting the cliff they are trying to get the public to support the idea of higher taxes on those they define as rich and paint a false picture that that will fix America’s problems.  America’s problems are so deep that that is a drop in the ocean compared to what we face.  If we not only increased taxes on the wealthy, but took all assets of every millionaire and billionaire in America it would not even cover America’s government expenses for a year.  And once you’ve taken all of those assets they would no longer be there to be taken again in the future.  Within less than a year we’d be back to where we are today.  Well, actually we’d be in worse shape because we would have lost the taxes that those people pay now so our national income would be far less than it is today.  That would make our crisis even greater than it is now.

That is why President Obama wants to grab any money he can for the government.  This week he let it be known that he wants to take over private IRAs, 401Ks, and other retirement accounts held by private citizens.  He would put them under government control to get his hands on the trillions of dollars that citizens have saved for their retirement.  He would essentially be issuing an IOU to the citizens to take care of us in retirement while he uses the money for more of his bast spending programs.  This is what has happened in countries like Venezuela where dictator Hugo Chavez has taken control of the private retirement accounts to raise more money for the government.  Leaders like this first take over the healthcare system and then they go after every source of money they can find.

Raising taxes simply lets our government continue to grow out of control and the larger the government gets the more freedoms the citizens lose.  We have a very weak group of people leading the GOP these days.  They pretty much go along with most everything the Democrats want to do.  But that’s all we’ve got right now to protect us from more and more increased spending and debt.  Until the 2014 mid-term elections when we have the chance of electing more conservative people to Congress who can start to turn this nation around we have to work with what we have.

Until that time it is imperative that all Americans continually put pressure on the representatives and senators to stop spending.  They do respond to pressure from voters and the threat that we can and will vote them out of office.  If we want to save the future for not just ourselves, but for our children and grandchildren, then we must keep the pressure on our elected officials until stronger people can be voted into leadership that will take our nation in the right direction.

In the meantime, you are going to see more and more companies fail as the progressives that control the left, the labor unions, and our educational system vilify those who keep our economy going, which is the businesses of America.  If you don’t stand against them you will see more and more done to destroy American business and wipe out our economy.

UPDATE 11-20-12:

Hostess Bakers and the union have been informed by the bankruptcy court that they are to try to mediate their differences in an effort to save the company and the jobs.  The court has given them until tomorrow to resolve their issues.  Depending on the outcome, Hostess may survive and retain some of their facilities and employees.  The real question is whether the parties have learned anything from this. If they are both truly working for a positive resolution, then they should be able to come to an agreement.  However, if they do not decide to work together they cannot survive long term, even if they come to an agreement now.

Business and labor unions, just like political parties, must learn to put the best interest of everyone on the table and find reasonable compromises or there is no real success.  And that is what ultimately plagues America and stands in the way of our nation's future.

UPDATE 11-22-12:

Since the parties could not come to an agreement, even in court ordered mediation, the negotiations fell apart.  The result is that the court has approved the liquidation of Hostess.  This is very sad for an iconic brand (or "brands" when you consider all the great products they had) and even moreso for over 18,000 employees.  While the company will take a year to wind down and approximtely 3200 employees will be needed to complete that process, in the end they will all be out of work.  And this is all because a union refused to come to terms with the concept that "some" is better than "none."

Heaven help America if this is the best that can be accomplished in labor contracts when our nation is only holding on by a thin thread.  It will take little more for our nation to break that thread and plunge America into the death spiral that awaits us unless we make significant changes rapidly.

Arrogance, Not Truth, Will Guide Obama As He Deals With Benghazi

Here’s the Nonsense:  Obama will seek the truth of what happened in Benghazi so the families of the victims along with the nation can be assured of closure on the issue.

Here’s the Horse Sense:  Truth has nothing to do with the goals of this administration about what happened in Benghazi.  Arrogance is the tool Obama will use to deal with this mess.
Those who think that Obama will crumble under the pressure of the Benghazi investigation are dreaming.  He has always been a man of arrogance and it will get nothing but worse the more he is pushed into a corner in the search for truth.
People who are power hungry do not take well to being challenged, especially those who’ve lived privileged lives.  And our president has certainly lived a privileged life, not the phony image put forth of him for PR purposes that makes people think his background is akin to being born in a log cabin he built himself, and raising his own food and cooking it over an open flame to feed his mother and his entire extended family (or any other tall tale they can come up with to make him seem like an American pioneer, frontiersman, and true hero).
No, he’s not from an extremely wealthy family, but his background shows he came from at least a middle class background and most likely some level of privilege just by looking at his education.  The Punahou School in Hawaii, Columbia, and Harvard are very expensive schools.  He is not known for great grades so we can eliminate academic scholarships.  Yet he not only got accepted to those schools, they were somehow paid for.  Unless he had some source of money provided for him, how would you explain his ability to attend schools like that?  And if it was provided for him, who was the benefactor that provided it?  But that is a sideline comment about what is being discussed here.  Let’s get back to the issue at hand.
Obama has shown arrogance since the day he was first elected.  He was very unpresidential and childish in his first term when he was quick to throw in the face of the Republicans that he won and they lost and made it clear they had no place in disagreeing with him.  At one point he even told them to sit in the back of the bus.  He’s made it clear that compromise means that those who disagree with him are to change and go along with his ideas.
What we’re seeing now is simply a repeat of what we’ve seen before, but now that he’s unencumbered from the burden of future re-election worries we can expect to see his attitude get even worse.  This is why we should not be surprised by his display of arrogance once again today.
When he gave his press conference today and was asked about Benghazi, only someone who is either blind or not paying attention could miss how indignant he looked.  His look seemed to say, “How dare you question me?”  This is the behavior that would be expected of someone who is spoiled, immature and childish, not the behavior of a president.
When Senators McCain, Graham, and Ayotte asked today that a Watergate-style special committee of inquiry be established to streamline the investigation into Benghazi they really thought some Democrats in Congress would be interested.  They even thought the mainstream media would want to know more.  But not one Democrat has shown any interest and the mainstream media aren't much better.  In fact, when they referred to this scandal as worse than Watergate the media scoffed and practically laughed at them, even though there are serious allegations about what led to the deaths of those 4 Americans.
Why would we think that the Democrats or media (which are essentially one in the same) would be interested in shining a light of investigation on anything about this president?  The Democrats believe that covering for this president is protecting him from Republicans.  They don’t see it as covering possible wrong doing.  They see it as protecting and supporting him and showing loyalty.  Truth and right and wrong do not enter into their thoughts.  They’ve bent over backwards to support him and get him re-elected.  Why would they turn on the one they have covered for so much?  Why would we think that they ask honest questions?  They believe that loyalty to their ideology is more important than truth.  Heaven help them if they question their chosen one!
And it’s this kind of protection and support from the Democrats and media that encourages and strengthens Obama’s resolve when asked a challenging question. It’s this treatment that causes him to believe his own press.  It’s this treatment that sends him the message that does not have to be accountable.
No, there may be Republicans and conservatives who’d like answers, but they are going to face an uphill battle against not just the Democrat Party and the Obama administration.  They are going to face it from the mainstream media.  And what they need to remember are the words of Samuel Clemens who said never to pick a fight with someone who buys ink by the barrel.  Benghazi could be damaging enough to do serious and even irreparable damage to this presidency, but for it to do so they will have to work extra hard to make sure the truth gets to the public and is not swept under the rug by the media to protect the president.

How To Fix The GOP Losing Streak

Here’s the Nonsense:  The GOP can only expect to win future elections if they abandon their principles and move to the left.  The country doesn’t care about principles anymore.

Here’s the Horse Sense:  Those who say the GOP cannot succeed without abandoning principles don’t have principles themselves.  Principles are the only hope for the future of America and they win people over not by promises but by educating people about the opportunities they create for our nation and our people.
Comedian Groucho Marx said, “Those are my principles.  If you don’t like them I have others.”  That’s a funny line, but when people actually live like that they are phonies and will lose sooner or later.  That’s exactly what happened to the GOP in this election.  The hypocrisy of the establishment GOP is laughable as they pretend to be conservative. But while the battle for control of the right goes on, the left ushers in the principles of another Marx besides Groucho and they handily win the election.  Not because there wasn’t substance to the GOP positions, but because there weren’t enough people left in the GOP to represent them who were principled conservatives that could present a truly conservative option to voters.
Before the voting machines had cooled down from the election, the establishment GOP was looking for someone to blame for the loss of their candidate, Mitt Romney.  Knowing they were in trouble with such dismal election results, everyone was looking for a scapegoat so they could maintain their power and quietly slink away until the next election when they’d rear their ugly heads once again.
Let’s get something straight from the start.  Just because someone calls themselves conservative, or is called conservative, does not make them one.  I can walk into a McDonalds and call myself a hamburger but it doesn’t make me one.  I can call myself anything I like, but it doesn’t mean it’s true.  The establishment GOP has become a group that includes many unprincipled people who are only involved with the GOP for power, not for principle.  For if they truly were in it for principle, if they truly believed in standing for the principles that are the foundation of the GOP platform, they would be true conservatives who would never be willing to compromise those very same principles.  But what’s the first thing they do when they lose the election (after looking for a scapegoat)?  They say the party should abandon its principles to attract more voters.
If you sincerely believe in the principles that are the foundation stones of our republic then you would not be willing to compromise them.  Principles that can be compromised aren’t worthy of being standards to live by.  Those who compromise are not worthy of leadership.   I don’t care who says it or how famous they are.  I don’t care how great a speaker they are.  I don’t care what great books they’ve written.  If they won’t stand on principle then we should not be looking to them to gain any insights into direction for the future.
Principles are the key to long term success.  Years ago during IBM’s heyday, their famous vice president F. R. “Buck” Rodgers said, “The only sacred cow in an organization is its principles.” Principles are the first thing sacrificed by most people. They won’t stick their neck out for principles, but they don’t even realize what hypocrites they are. Principles are the single most important thing and yet they are usually the first to go. Politicians and their consultants and advisors are perfect examples of people who are quick to abandon them. True leaders hold fast to principles.
Greek philosopher Heraclitus said, “The soul is dyed the color of its thoughts. Think only on those things that are in line with your principles and can bear the light of day. The content of your character is your choice. Day by day, what you do is who you become. Your integrity is your destiny.”

Yet there are people in the establishment GOP who will compromise principles at the drop of a hat.  And now that they’ve found, once again, that their candidate failed miserably in the election they are quick to abandon principles and suggest that that is the only way to win in the future.  Maybe they need to examine why their candidates like John McCain, Bob Dole, and now Mitt Romney aren’t well received by voters.  It’s because their values don’t represent the values of most Americans.  Those who love America want leaders who will stand for principle regardless of the cost.  But the establishment GOP not only won’t do that, they are quick to attack anyone who they think made a mistake that could possibly be seen as negative by the left.

Conservative voters are the ones who made this election go the way it did.  They either chose to vote for Romney and at least stem the tide of another term of Obama’s spending, increasing regulations, and continued disregard for the Constitution or they chose to stay home, vote for third party candidates, or even write in other candidates.  Between all of it there wasn’t enough concentrated support for anyone other than Obama to win.  And so we had a smaller turnout for Mitt Romney than for John McCain.  Obama didn’t win the election, the establishment GOP lost it.  But the establishment GOP refuse to understand it.  They’ve got blinders on and keep telling themselves that it has to be someone else’s fault.  They have never noticed that the common denominator in these candidates is looking at them in the mirror.  It's the establishment GOP.  Shouldn’t that tell them something?

The establishment GOP have many people in their group who are not willing to truly embrace principles.  They don't understand that sometimes we have to pay a high price to do what is right. A true leader knows that it is the only choice to make. True leaders will sacrifice for principles, while many who simply hold leadership positions often sacrifice their principles.  The establishment GOP is made up of many of the latter.

Abandoning our principles to try to gain some votes will not be successful.  What we must do is educate people as to why choosing the higher road, the road of values and principles is superior to living in the muck and mire of disgust that the left calls free choice when, in fact, it actually enslaves its followers.
The GOP can only survive and succeed if it embraces true conservative principles.  That may mean that many who have even held high positions in the party must leave.  But without a solid stand for principle by the party members, including the leadership, the GOP can never succeed like it desires.
Conservatives must draw a line in the sand based on principle.  If the establishment GOP won’t abandon its folly and become people of honor who will stand for principle at all cost, then the GOP will never be attractive to voters.  It will go by the wayside, just as the Whig Party did before it when it died due to a split over slavery and the result was the birth of the Republican Party.
Whether the establishment GOP comes around or not, the conservatives need to offer them the ultimatum.  Either they change and embrace conservative principles or the conservatives must form their own party.  Then they can take a solid stand for principle and with much hard work over time they can educate and win over voters who are looking for the party of integrity and substance.  Any future the conservatives hope to have in American politics will only come about as the result of a strong and unwavering stand for principle.

House Speaker John Boehner Already Offering Obama Higher Taxes

Here’s the Nonsense:  The Republicans may have lost the presidential election, but they retained control of the House of Representatives and they can hold the line against an overspending and overtaxing president and senate until the 2014 midterm elections.

Here’s the Horse Sense:  The establishment Republicans cannot stand up against the Democrats for 10 minutes, let alone for 2 years until the midterm elections.  The right is in a very dark place and it will take diligence and a lot of pressure from the citizenry to hold them off for 2 years.
Speaker of the House John Boehner didn’t even make it 24 hours past the election before making offers to give in to President Obama on higher taxes.  Anyone thinking that the House of Representatives under his leadership has any chance of holding the line for Republicans until the 2014 midterm elections is dreaming.

In an article on today a Reuters story reported:
House Speaker John Boehner offered Wednesday to pursue a deal with a victorious President Barack Obama that will include higher taxes "under the right conditions" to help reduce the nation's staggering debt and put its finances in order.
Speaker Boehner is a man who has no ability to or knowledge of how to negotiate from a position of strength, let alone weakness.  As I wrote in my book, No Tomorrows: How To Halt America’s Imminent Collapse And Return To The American Dream – And Why It Must Start With The 2012 Elections
The Republican Speaker of the House, John Boehner, has developed a reputation for compromise. But his definition of compromise appears to be the opposite of President Obama’s. The President’s idea of compromise is that the opposing side will give in to doing it his way. Boehner, on the other hand, seems to settle for deals that give little or no benefit to the Republican side of a debate, often settling for no more than platitudes, instead of results. Boehner often justifies his poor results in negotiation by espousing his version of positive thinking. He is often quoted as saying, “If you do the right thing for the right reasons, the right things will happen.”
I’ve got news for him: It’s not true. I’ve observed many times where someone did the right thing for the right reason and the situation still ended in disaster. Boehner’s statement is a phony mantra.
I suspect Mr. Boehner has learned to use this phrase as a crutch or excuse. It appears that he may not even believe it. Rather, it appears that he may use it to quell criticisms because most people, when they initially hear what sounds like a positive statement with good intention, will back off their criticism.
Here’s the question: If this motto has really worked for Mr. Boehner, then why has he so often negotiated with Democrats and come out the loser? As voters, we need to reject nice sounding platitudes and hold legislators such as Boehner accountable or replace those legislators altogether. We don’t need cute sayings. We need elected leaders who will fight for the right results regardless of how the mainstream media portrays those leaders. They need to be realistic, accept the opposition, criticism, and difficulties they will face, and then continue to fight on. I suspect Mr. Boehner has learned to use this phrase as a crutch or excuse. It appears that he may not even believe it. Rather, it appears that he may use it to quell criticisms because most people, when they initially hear what sounds like a positive statement with good intention, will back off their criticism.
America is now in a very dark place and those of us who hold to traditional values and want to see America shine again will have to be diligent and fight hard to keep people like John Boehner from giving away what little negotiating ability we have left.  If the Republican party is to survive it must give up the ways of establishment Republicans or be replaced with a new, more vibrant and effective party with solid values and strong leadership.

Obama Wins, America Loses

The Horse Sense & Nonsense:  There is no horse sense in what America did in this election.  Rather, what America has done will go down in our history as the greatest act of nonsense and selfish stupidity ever done in our history.

All the evidence pointed to Romney having an overwhelmingly successful campaign while Obama was not getting interest or support anywhere near what he got in 2008.  The crowds for Romney were huge while they had dwindled for Obama to as small as being only 5% of the size they were when Obama ran in 2008.  The resulting re-election for Obama doesn’t make logical sense.  Something about it all doesn't make sense but no one is talking about it, much like the many other things about Obama that are “off limits” to talk about.  The results of this election make so little sense as to make conspiracy theories about how our leaders are selected seem somewhat plausible.
The results of the election may not make sense when you examine what happened in the campaign, but it seems that we have no choice but to accept them at face value.  They paint a very different picture of America today than it ever has been.

Thomas Jefferson was right when he said a nation cannot be ignorant and free.  Americans have chosen to look the other way and not be involved in our political process where we hold our leaders accountable and choose only to have those of high character in leadership.  And since America has shown its ignorance we will no longer be free.

America is a divided nation and nothing that happened in the election is going to heal that.  Mitt Romney's concession speech where he called for bipartisanship will be disregarded by this president.  After all, in his first term he refused to work with Republicans, he just blamed them even when the Democrats had total control of the Senate and House and Republicans had no say in legislation.  The president chose division and blame so he wouldn't have to accept responsibility.  The president’s administration has been the most divisive in modern history, maybe even in the entire history of America.
We faced serious problems as a nation if the policies and spending of President Obama would have stopped at the end of his first term.  Now that he’s been re-elected to a 2nd term, we will see far more spending and debt, far more executive orders bypassing our constitutionally-based check and balance system of government, and far more division in our nation.  Political correctness will rule and freedom of speech and religion will go by the wayside even more than they have in the past 4 years.

All of this and more won’t happen overnight, but it will happen much faster than you think it will.  One day in the not too distant future you will wake up and realize that we’ve lost our freedoms and they are gone forever.  Elections to make change will no longer be possible because the Constitution will have been changed under the guise that it’s a “living document” that must change with the times instead of being a solid foundation stone for our laws that does not change and sets standards for a moral and good society.  In that day when you wake up to recognize those changes you will see that the laws are different, and the political system is no longer one controlled by the people.  Rather, the system will control the people.

As I wrote in my book, No Tomorrows:  How To Halt America’s Imminent Collapse And Return To The American Dream – And Why It Must Start With The 2012 Elections:

There’s a Cherokee Indian proverb that describes an old Cherokee teaching his grandson about life.  He tells the boy, “A fight is going on inside me. It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil—he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. The other is good—he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility,
kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. This same fight is going on inside you—and inside every other person, too.”

The grandson thinks about it for a minute and then asks his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?” The old Cherokee simply replies, “The one you feed.”

We have chosen to pick as leaders people who feed the evil wolf.

The establishment Republicans who control the GOP continue to give us losing candidates. We've had no real conservative as the presidential nominee since Ronald Reagan.  And with this election, Romney was another one of their choices that lost.  I am sure that in 2016 they will try to force upon us again another one of their establishment candidates and if we allow it, we will lose again.  Only by then it will be too late to get another chance like we still have now.  My bet is that the establishment GOP and their influencers like Karl Rove will want Jeb Bush as the candidate in 2016.  And while I'm not as sure about the vice presidential candidate for that election, I wouldn't be surprised if they look to someone like Marco Rubio thinking he'll bring the Latino vote.  If we allow it, we can kiss our future goodbye.

I fear for the future of our children and those who follow them.  We did not rise to the level necessary to keep America from the path on which we are headed.  Now we face the future that Ronald Reagan warned us about when he said:  “You and I have a rendezvous with destiny. We will preserve for our children, the last best hope of man on earth, or we will sentence them to take the first step into a thousand years of darkness. If we fail, at least let our children and our children's children say of us we justified our brief moment here. We did all that could be done."

Sadly, we have failed and our children and children’s children cannot say we justified our brief moment here.  We did not do all that could be done.

And The Winner Is… Or Is There Something More Important Right Now?

Here’s the Nonsense:  We’re down to the last moments of the presidential campaign and it’s important we find out what predictions the pundits have made for the election.

Here’s the Horse Sense:  Not only are the predictions nothing more than speculation and educated guesses (and probably a lot of uneducated ones, too), they aren’t nearly as important as other issues we should be focusing on during these remaining hours in the campaign.
People want predictions so I’ll give in to the requests and give you mine, but first we should discuss something more important.  Ever notice that during each presidential election pundits and broadcasters are obsessed with predictions of who will win?  This is the most important election of our lifetimes, maybe even in the entire history of our nation, and we’re still stuck on childish guessing games that take the majority of our time when there’s something far more important to be considered.  With this being such an important election shouldn’t we be using these last few days and hours before the closing of the polls to make sure as many people as possible who have not voted yet are clearly aware of the real issues being fought for in this election so that they can make a good decision who to vote for?

Many a pundit have said that by now most people have made up their minds on who they are going to vote for and persuading anybody now is really impossible.  But I beg to differ.  My life has been spent in business.  From the time I was a small child my father, a successful businessman, had me learning business and was getting me involved in it.  I worked in management for an international corporation while still in high school, started my own business to put myself through school, and by 25 years old had started, built, and sold 3 businesses.  And that was just the beginning of my 38+ year business career.  Why is that important?  Because the core of success of any business is sales and I spent years learning and becoming at the top in the sales field, which has served me well throughout my life in all areas of business, not just sales.  One thing I’ve learned is that no sale is complete until the person has paid their money, signed the contract, actually made the purchase.  Until someone votes, the sale is not complete.  So all those people left out there who have not voted yet still haven’t made their “buying decision” until they do, because until they do there’s still a chance to change their mind (whether they think so or not).
As I talk to people I’m amazed how little so many people know about this election and the candidates.  So many are basing decisions on superficial factors.  Few really know the issues, who the candidates really are, the record of the candidates, or have taken the time to find out.  Yet our nation is about to collapse economically, the future of our children is at stake, and they are not taking the time to get involved.

Some say they are just too busy, but if they were on a ship crossing the ocean and it was sinking and a crew member told them to get into a lifeboat would they respond saying that they were too busy and would deal with it later or just take their chances?  Not if they were sane.  And yet that is exactly what is happening with many voters.
We have two candidates to choose from (Let’s be honest, any third party candidate doesn’t have a true chance of winning so it’s not even worth discussing them at this point.).  We have one who is our current president and has a track record in the office for which he is running for reelection.  The other candidate is a businessman and former governor who also has a record.  We do have things to which we can compare.

The best measure of comparison is to look at what has happened during the past 4 years in our country.
  • Unemployment has gotten worse.
  • Government assistance to individuals has increased.
  • Debt has increased.
  • The size of government has increased.
  • More businesses have failed.
  • Fewer businesses are being started.
  • More people live in poverty.
  • Our nation is less respected around the world.
  • Relationships with our allies have weakened.
  • Our enemies have taken advantage of new weaknesses they’ve found in our nation.
  • Our military is being stripped of its strength.
  • Those serving our nation, military or otherwise, have found they can no longer count on America to protect them and stand with them, which is a first in all of American history.
And those are just a few things that have happened to America under President Obama.
This is because we have in Barack Obama a president who came into office with no understanding of who or what America is.  His background is from a radical upbringing and past that is anti-American with a goal of dragging America down to the level of other countries.  He was taken from Hawaii to Indonesia and went to school in his early years there.  Then he returned to America and attended school at the exclusive and expensive Punahou School in Hawaii.  During his time in Hawaii he was heavily influenced by Frank Marshall Davis, Communist Party Member, who Obama’s family directed he spend a lot of time with and who Obama grew very close to, as was documented in his autobiography when it was orignially written.  He has admitted to being a frequent drug user while in school.

After high school Obama attended college at Occidental in California and Columbia in New York, and received his law degree from Harvard in Massachussetts.  He has admitted to always seeking out professors and other students with radical and often Marxists views to learn from.  While he is not known to have come from wealth, somehow he attended these very expensive schools but we do not know how he got into the schools academicaly or financially because he has sealed all of his records so that they are not available to the public.
His work background includes time working as a university lecturer in Chicago (contrary to the claim that he was a law professor, it's said the only records are that he was a lecturer), a limited time with a law firm in Chicago, working as a community organizer in Chicago, which seems to be what he feels is his greatest achievement.

We need to remember that as a community organizer he was trained in Saul Alinsky’s methods and ideas to overthrow our capitalist system and turn us into a socialist marxist style government. This philosophy teaches that America is a nation of thieves.  It considers us guilty of stealing all the successes our citizens and our nation have had instead of our true history of offering more opportunity than any nation on earth and having achieved greater deeds and successes and freed more people than any nation in history that has all come about because of hard work and integrity.  They believes only an elite few, of which Obama is one, deserve a better life and the rest of us never built anything.  Any successes we have had are because we have stolen from the hard work of others.
After working as a community organizer Obama was elected as a State Senator in Illinois and then a U. S. Senator from Illinois before running for president.

His opponent, Mitt Romney, not only believes in the greatness of America, he’s lived it.  He loves America and wants all the opportunity from which he’s personally benefited to be available to all citizens.  He believes in the American Dream because he’s lived it.  He’s been so successful that if he were to be elected to be president he would be the second or third most wealthy man to ever hold the office.  Depending on his actual net worth and adjusting past presidents’ wealth to 2011 dollars, it’s been estimated Romney is worth between $190 and $250 million.  For those who are interested, George Washington was the richest with a net worth of over $540 million in 2011 dollars.  Thomas Jefferson was second in wealth with a net worth of $218 million followed by Theodore Roosevelt at $128 million, also in 2011 dollars.
While he started out poor and working in the construction industry, Mitt Romney’s father became very successful and wealthy.  He was head of American Motors and governor of Michigan.  When Mitt received his inheritance he gave it away and worked to earn his own success.  He received degrees in law and business from Harvard.  He started his own company, Bain Capital, and built it to a huge success making millions by taking over struggling companies and making them successful.  During his time there thousands of jobs were created.  After leaving the firm and turned the struggling Winter Olympics around to become a success and also became governor of Massachussetts.  As governor he turned the state around financially taking it from deficits to surpluses all four years he was in office.

The bottom line is that Barack Obama has never worked in a position where he had to create jobs, meet a payroll, handle a budget, or anything similar to what is the lifeblood of America’s economy which is business.  Mitt Romney, on the other hand, has spent his life working in business and jobs where the skills needed to make an economy work are the foremost requirement.  And he’s been successful at it time after time.
Yes, there are many other things we could say, in fact we could write a book about their qualifications but the space and time is too limited now.  Certainly we should consider facts like Romney’s giving huge amounts to charity and personal stories of how he’s helped numerous people throughout his life while keeping those stories quiet because he doesn’t believe that doing good deeds should be broadcast.  Rather, good deeds are the reward in and of themselves in Mitt Romney’s eyes.

We have a nation that is about to collapse financially and is in desperate need of leadership.  President Obama has not only proven that he cannot lead, he doesn’t have the faintest idea how an economy works or how to fix one that is broken.  We have 4 years of devastation to our country that will not only continue, they will get worse if he is reelected.  His plan is to continue and increase what he’s done his first 4 years if he’s reelected.  We will not survive 4 more years of what we’ve had.  Only Mitt Romney gives us solutions and gets us on another track designed to fix this nation.  The only thing that could hold Romney back from success is if Harry Reid and the Democrats retain control of the Senate, which will mean that Romney’s hands will be tied as president.  Romney won’t even be able to repeal the economically devastating Obamacare legislation if the Democrats retain control of the Senate.
This is the message that those who have not voted need to consider, not a message about guessing who is going to win.  Predictions are interesting and fun, but they serve no purpose especially when the nation is just a few short inches from falling over a fiscal cliff from which we will never be able to return.  Making sure that that message is understood by every voter has got to be the priority until the polls close on November 6th.

And by the way, since people keep asking for a prediction I’ll humor them and give one.  However, understand that my prediction is assuming that a number of things that could happen don’t happen.  Mitt Romney has had amazing success in his campaign, especially after Americans were able to hear who he really is in his own words at the debates instead of the words the Obama campaign has used trying to create a false image of Romney to try to drive people away from him.  Once Americans saw the real Romney the turnout to his campaign stops skyrocketed with tens of thousands turning out for Romney while Obama was only getting audiences of hundreds to a few thousand.  Obama’s campaign stops are getting crowds that are as much as 20 times smaller than he got in 2008.  The interest in Obama has waned as people suffer in far worse circumstances than they were in before he took office.  They see him as having no answers while Romney does have a plan.
But there have been a number of incidents that threaten a fair and honest election.  Those include such things as:

  • Intimidation and influence of voters through such things as threats of riots and violence.
  • Illegal activities at polling places.
  • Outright voter fraud.
So, if these types of things can be avoided and stopped, and a fair election can be had, then I have no doubt that Mitt Romney will win in a landslide.

But with these threats and dangers to a fair and honest election we can only hope that a large enough number of people understand the issues and vote for Romney so that any fraud or threats are overidden by the sheer number of voters who turn out for Romney.  That is why this message is so important and why spending our time speculating who will win really isn’t the most important thing we should be doing with our time.
