The Horse Sense Blog compares the nonsense in today's news with good ol' fashioned horse sense

“…I shall speak forth my sentiments freely and without reserve.… It is only in this way that we can hope to arrive at truth, and fulfill the great responsibility which we hold to God and our country. Should I keep back my opinions at such a time, through fear of giving offense, I should consider myself as guilty of treason towards my country, and of an act of disloyalty toward the Majesty of Heaven, which I revere above all earthly kings.” - Patrick Henry, March 23, 1775

"The further a society drifts from truth the more it will hate those who speak it." - George Orwell

Cyprus Is Only The Beginning

Here's the Nonsense:  Cyprus has problems, but it's because they're a small country and can't handle these types of economic situations.

Here's the Horse Sense:  Cyprus is only the beginning. Now it's planned that other European countries will follow the same plan.  America's put itself on the European path and will follow suit before it's all over.

If you think this week's announcement by Cyprus that they are taking a portion of bank depositor's savings is unique to that country, think again.  It's coming to America whether you like it or not.

Cyprus, like so many nations, is in financial trouble and its banks have closed temporarily to try to get things in order.  That has left the citizens without access to their money while the government tries in vain to fix the problem.  London's Telegraph reported:  "Cypriot finance minister Michalis Sarris warns the country faces hard times and said large depositors could lose up to 40pc of their savings as banks stay shuttered until Thursday."  That's a potential 40% for those with savings over 100,000 Euros (that's about $127,800).  How would you feel if you lost 40% of your savings?  Yet it is happening while we watch in Cyprus.

Now most people will say that Cyprus is a tiny country and that it couldn't happen in bigger countries.  Really?  In a separate article the Telegraph reported:  "Savings accounts in Spain, Italy and other European countries will be raided if needed to preserve Europe's single currency by propping up failing banks, a senior eurozone official has announced."

Now what do you think?

The inability of mankind to handle its finances is obvious.  The path that Europe has taken through socialist policies has torn its economy to shreds and will ultimately cause more financial despair and devastation than has been previously seen. Don't be surprised if we see a return to what happened in the Weimar Republic, and it won't just be in Europe.

America has placed itself on the exact same path as Europe by copying their stupidity and failed policies.  Pouring trillions of taxpayer dollars into a system that is so devoid of any moral compass, let alone logical economic thinking, is driving America down the same road.  Sure, we might have a little more time, but "little" is the key word in that statement.

The chances of turning America around are very small.  It may actually be too late.  We've embraced moral decay like it was the greatest thing in history.  And that is the sign that a society is failing.  Ethics are redefined to be politically correct.  That leads to other bad decisions that erode the stability of a society.  And in the name of political correctness America has embraced ridiculous and unsound economic policies that are its result.

America, you've got one last chance to save yourself.  But are you willing to pay the price necessary to do it?  Are you willing to give up your failed ways and turn back to sound values and principals, the ones that made America great in the first place?

A View On Gay Marriage That Defines The Future Of The GOP

Here's the Nonsense:  The times are changing and it can no longer be denied that gay marriage will become law.  It's time for the conservatives to move into the 21st century.

Here's the Horse Sense:  Supporters of gay marriage are criticizing conservatives who still disagree with it as being out of touch with modern times.  They criticize because they just don't get it.

The battle about legalization of gay marriage continues with many in the GOP moving to the left and supporting it.  Many of these self-proclaimed conservatives (note that I didn't say they are conservative) criticize others along with the left saying they are behind the times.  They just don't understand the basis for the opposing viewpoint.

Watching this debate go back and forth with no sense of objective reporting has been nothing short of annoying.  Reports are that in France over the weekend that a rally was held against legalization of gay marriage in that country.  The media reported 300,000 people showed up.  The supporters of the rally reported 1.2 million showed up.  Sounds a lot like what happens in America when conservatives hold any kind of event.  But let's assume the lower number of 300,000 is right.  That's a lot of people, especially in a country of 65 million people.  The equivalent number in America would be almost 1.5 million people.

That's a huge portion of the populace to come out to express disagreement with their government.  And it's not the first time on this issue.  (Hmmm… I thought France was supposed to be so "enlightened" and, according to the left, we were supposed to try to be more like them.)  The point is that this is not a settled issue in most of the world, even the parts of the world that the left see as role models for the rest of us.

But through all this back and forth there is no communication because the side that supports gay marriage won't even try to understand the position of those who are against it.  I've been waiting for someone to clearly and succinctly state the position for some time.  Today I was surprised to finally hear someone say it quite well.  And it was said well because the point that was made goes far beyond just gay marriage.

It was former governor Mike Huckabee in an interview with Newsmax: “The mistake is that we sometimes base our public policy decisions on how we feel, how we think, maybe even some personal experiences, and we don’t regard a lot of these issues from the standpoint of an objective standard."

If that wasn't clear enough, he went on to say:  “Let me explain what I mean by that. If we have subjective standards, that means that we’re willing to move our standards based on the prevailing whims of culture. Politicians have an obligation to be thermostats, not just thermometers. They’re not simply to reflect the temperature of the room, or the culture, as it were. They’re to set the standards for law, for what’s right, for what’s wrong, understanding that not everybody’s going to agree with it."

That stated in a pretty clear and simple way.  On this issue Huckabee is clearly a true conservative and expresses it well.  Conservatives believe in standards.  They believe there is an ultimate right and wrong and that viewpoints on those issues don't change with the popular culture.

It's just like when people tell a religious person that their doctrine needs to change to become current with the times.  A religion's doctrine is what that religion believes is ultimate right and wrong.  It does not and cannot change.  The religion believes that it comes from God and cannot be changed by man.  God determines right and wrong, man does not and cannot.

But people on the opposing side cannot understand that.  They believe that the situation determines what is right and wrong.  And they believe that what is right for one person may be wrong for another.  But a religion cannot compromise because by doing so it is saying that God is willing to change what is right and what is wrong.

The increase in the belief in situation ethics shows how far the progressive mindset is spreading in society.  It is unhealthy and will ultimately lead to the demise of society.  But the progressive mindset (which is also alive and well in much of the GOP, too) is such that they cannot understand someone who would not agree with them.

They believe it is unkind to disagree with them.  Their political correctness hinders them from seeing the world as being a place where there is an ultimate right and wrong.  They will criticize and condemn anyone who disagrees with them.

That mindset is destroying America.  We probably have passed the point of no return in the failure of our values.  Few people will stand on principle when others around them are giving in.  That is what is happening to the GOP and happened long ago to the Democrat Party.

Societies, nations, and empires fail when they no longer have a core set of values that is unchanging.  When they cannot see that there is an ultimate right and wrong, they will compromise and eventually they will fail.  And those values always come from religion and a willingness to submit to it as the ultimate judge of good and evil.

The GOP has shown that they will give up the values that they were founded upon. This will ultimately cause many to leave the party as they come to accept that their party has failed them.  As that happens not only will they continue to lose elections, they will lose their party and unless another party that stands for traditional values replaces them and is embraced by the American people, the end of America will be upon us.

Pat Buchanan says it well of the GOP in his latest column:  "When the obituary of the party is written, the subhead will likely read "Dead of Self-inflicted Wounds."

The Next Step: Tracking What's In Your Packages

Here's the Nonsense:  The government is insisting that FedEx and UPS know what's in the packages they ship.  Holding them accountable if there's anything illegal is a good way to help reduce crime.

Here's the Horse Sense:  The government is telling FedEx and UPS they must police what is shipped through their services.  This is about more than making sure illegal items are not shipped, it's potentially about freedom.

The next step in the invasion of American citizens' lives is happening.  FedEx and UPS are now being told that they must police the contents of sealed packages that they ship.  Specifically, at this point, the government wants these companies to make sure no illegal prescriptions are being shipped.  WND reported that FedEx spokesman Patrick Fitgerald said:  “What is unusual and really disturbing is it became clear to us along the way that FedEx was being targeted for some level criminal activity as it relates to these medicines that are being shipped from pharmacies, and we find it to be completely absurd because it’s really not our role,” Fitzgerald said. “We have no way of knowing what is legal and not within the packages that we’re picking up and delivering in this situation.”

He went on to say:  “At the heart of the investigation are sealed packages that are being sent by, as far as we can tell, licensed pharmacies. These are medicines with legal prescriptions written by licensed physicians. So it’s difficult for us to understand where we would have some role in this. We are a transportation company that picks up and delivers close to 10 million packages every day. They are sealed packages, so we have no way of knowing specifically what’s inside and we have no interest in violating the privacy rights of our customers,” Fitzgerald said.

As troubling as this information is, it's just the tip of another iceberg with our government.  Sure, it's obvious that they are expecting these companies to do something that is, in reality, impossible.  But what's worse is what it implies.

This action implies that in the future they may expect companies to police what you are ordering on Ebay or Amazon.  If you order a book they don't like, will you be in trouble?  If you order some camping gear will you be seen as a radical conservative doomsday prepper?  If you order some camo clothing will you be seen as some right wing radical?  Where does this end?

America is in trouble and there's no stopping a government clampdown on freedom unless it's done early in the process.  If allowed to go too far it will not stop and you will see a tyranny unleashed on America like you cannot imagine.

Citizens need to put pressure on their elected representatives for this type of action to stop.  The politicians are the only path to turn this around.  This is why it's so important to elect the right kind of people, which is something we have rarely done in the past.

If you care about your freedoms and those of your children and grandchildren then it's time to tell our politicians to stop this out of control government or they will be replaced in the 2014 elections.

John Boehner And Paul Ryan, Two Comrades In Arms?

Here's the Nonsense There are leaders in the GOP who understand that things aren't really that bad.  These are the people who can and will work with the president to bridge the divide between the parties and help America.

Here's the Horse Sense:  The leadership in the GOP should be run out of town on a rail, as the old saying goes.  John Boehner and Paul Ryan proved Sunday that they're no different in their understanding of the problems we face.  Leadership like this dooms America to failure.

On Sunday's morning political shows the GOP leadership was showing their stupidity again.  Speaker of the House John Boehner told ABC's This Week that "We do not have an immediate debt crisis.”  While he tried to save himself from embarrassment at such a stupid statement with a quick comeback:  “We have one looming because we have entitlement programs that are not sustainable in their current form. They’re going to go bankrupt,” he said. “I would argue that we do need to do something.”

As bad as it is to think that the Speaker of the House is so clueless that he actually believes this stuff, it's worse when a congressman who many think has a good chance at the 2016 presidential nomination agrees.  That's right, Paul Ryan was on Face the Nation on CBS on Sunday agreeing with Boehner:   “We do not have a debt issue right now, but we see it coming. So let’s get ahead of this crisis.”

Obviously these guys don't understand economics.  And if anyone tries saying that Ryan is known for economics, well, this proves he's not as sharp as many thought he was.  We are in debt so deep in America that there is a good chance we can never dig ourselves out of it.

This does not give much hope for the GOP.  It was good that Rand Paul won the straw poll at CPAC this past week.  He's been taking a strong stand for conservatism.  Others are thrilled that Marco Rubio came in a strong second place in the poll, but the fact that he's showing his non-conservative stripes should have people taking notice.  Holy cow, even Ann Coulter noticed when she called him out for backing amnesty for illegal immigrants.  Ms. Coulter is obviously waking up a bit by not only that comment, but also a comment that she now rejects Chris Christie because of his stand on illegal immigration, too.  With her backing of him and Mitt Romney as conservatives in 2012 it made many of us wonder what she'd been smoking to come to those conclusions.

Clearly the conservatives were out in force at CPAC, which is great since it's not the conservative organization it claims to be (remember that Al Cardenas, the head of the ACU that runs CPAC, endorsed Romney as a conservative in 2012, too, and is also a big establishment GOP lobbyist in Washington).

The future of America is up for grabs right now. The GOP is reeling from the conservatives attacks against the establishment.  It's time to not only keep up those attacks and keep them on the ropes, but to push to victory and take the Republican Party back to the root values it was built upon.  This will be a long hard fight for conservatives to win, but they must push hard to do so and then, before the dust settles, turn around and demolish the left and their progressive agenda.  This is the only chance America has to rise again to its greatness.  Are you up for the fight?

House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy Declares War On Conservatives

Here's the Nonsense:  The leadership in the GOP understands that it's important to keep things moving forward by passing legislation, whether or not they have a majority of Republicans agreeing with them.  Better to vote with Democrats than to be bogged down by conservatives.

Here's the Horse Sense:  The GOP leadership has proven they aren't conservative and don't care what the voters think.  House leadership has now said they are willing to align with Democrats against the conservatives in the House so they can keep legislation moving to the Senate, even though voters are in strong disagreement with them.

House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy was reported by Breitbart to have said:  “It is better if the House does their work,” said McCarthy. “We should be sending bills to the Senate.”  In other words, they don't care what we think, they just want power and control.  McCarthy shows that he, Boehner, Cantor and those who side with them are the enemy of the American people by essentially declaring war on conservatives.  It has never been more important for the American voters to be involved and working hard to defeat and replace these people in 2014.

If you care about America.  If you care about your future.  And even more, if you care about the future of your children and grandchildren, then you must get involved right now to keep GOP leadership under pressure to move to the right.  People like this need to be voted out of office and replaced with people who want to save our nation.

The price we are paying with all the damage that's been done just keeps getting higher because of the actions of people like these.  As the old saying goes, with friends like this, who needs enemies?

Put pressure on your elected representatives and let them know that Washington needs more people like Rand Paul, Ted Cruz, and Mike Lee and fewer like these buffoons.  This is our last chance to stop this madness.  These people don't care about you or your future.  All they want is power.  So voters need to show them that the real power is in the voters hands at the ballot box.

UPDATE:  It seems that the pressure has come to bear on the GOP leadership as a result of Breitbart's article and now they have reached out to Breitbart to clarify their stand saying they want a GOP majority on these issues.  I suspect what that really means is that people reacted and the leadership's phone lines melted causing the leaders to back off their stand.  While I'm glad they backed off, the fact is that they still need to be replaced.  Anyone who doesn't see it isn't paying attention.

Tea Party Conspiracy Exposed... Or Is It?

Here's the Nonsense: Finally someone has exposed it! The Tea Party is infiltrating the government, has taken over the Republican Party, and must be stopped.

Here's the Horse Sense: The Tea Party could only hope to have control of the Republican Party. Unfortunately they have little influence there. But we can all dream that they will infiltrate and take control of our government, for then America might have a chance to survive.

In a poorly thought out piece published by Salon.com, former Clinton Administration official Robert Reich appears to believe that the Tea Party is infiltrating the U. S. government and has taken control fo the Republican Party. I'm not sure if he's supposed to be on meds he's not taking and is, therefore, delusional, or if he's just so far out there in his thought processes that he actually believes this stuff. Either way, he's wrong.

Reich starts by stating:
Imagine a plot to undermine the government of the United States, to destroy much of its capacity to do the public’s business, and to sow distrust among the population.

Imagine further that the plotters infiltrate Congress and state governments, reshape their districts to give them disproportionate influence in Washington, and use the media to spread big lies about the government.
A plot? We could only hope so, but there is no evidence that such a thing exists except in the mind of an old progressive man named Robert Reich. The idea that districts are being reshaped to give disproportionate influence in Washington is an amazing projection. Reich seems to forget that the Democrats have specialized in this for decades. Getting districts reshaped is a key way they have taken control of so much of the government. Usually claiming voter discrimination if the districts aren't reshaped, they have worked tirelessly and quite successfully to get district after district reshaped and put in their control. If the Tea Party-supported candidates who have been elected have gotten this to happen in a few areas, then it's probably a small shift back towards balance in our election processes.

The bottom line, though, is that the Tea Party not only does not control the Republican Party, they are hated by the establishment Republicans who control the GOP. Fools like House Speaker John Boehner have shown their hatred for the Tea Party and conservatives by punishing those who represent their constituents and stand on principle instead of getting in line with what the establishment in the GOP want.

If the Tea Party controlled the Republican Party we would not be in the trouble we are in as a nation.  They would be trying to fight to save America and stop the mindless antics that go on in Washington.

No Mr. Reich, you are wrong... but I really wish you were right.
